Jailer 2 has ended an eight-year wait. After 12 days in theatres, the Rajinikanth sequel has become the highest-grossing Tamil film ever, passing the worldwide total of his own 2.0.
As per early estimates cited by Sacnilk, Jailer 2 collected Rs 9.45 crore net in India on Day 12 across 10,450 shows. Its domestic net total stands at Rs 408.15 crore. With overseas collections included, the worldwide gross is Rs 733.35 crore.
The record it broke
The previous Tamil benchmark was 2.0, which ended at Rs 691 crore worldwide in 2018. Jailer 2 crossed that figure on Sunday. It had already moved past the first Jailer at Rs 604 crore and Vijay’s Leo at Rs 605 crore.
It is now the first Kollywood film to cross Rs 700 crore. In the wider Indian market, it is the seventh South Indian release and the 18th Indian film to reach that mark.
Where the Day 12 numbers went
The language-wise split explains the film’s current momentum. On Day 12, the Tamil version led with Rs 5.65 crore from 4,518 shows. Telugu contributed Rs 2 crore from 1,771 shows, while the Hindi version took Rs 1.40 crore from 3,949 shows. Kannada added Rs 40 lakh from 212 shows.
- Tamil: Rs 5.65 crore / 4,518 shows
- Telugu: Rs 2 crore / 1,771 shows
- Hindi: Rs 1.40 crore / 3,949 shows
- Kannada: Rs 40 lakh / 212 shows
The instructive story for distribution planners is the Hindi belt. The Hindi version received nearly as many shows as the Tamil version but collected a fraction of the Tamil number. Telugu and Kannada, with far fewer shows, returned stronger per-show averages. That suggests the film is still driven by core southern markets, while the Hindi audience has not expanded at the same pace.
Why it matters
For entertainment marketers, this is not just a fan milestone. A Tamil title crossing Rs 700 crore changes how rights are priced for broadcast, streaming and brand integrations. It also gives media planners a benchmark for reach: a theatrical hit of this scale carries audience data that can be tapped for branded content windows, especially during second-week and third-week momentum.
Jailer 2 also strengthens the case for sequel economics in Tamil cinema. Rajinikanth has historically avoided sequels to his big hits; returning to Jailer has produced both a franchise extension and a new category record.
The next milestone
The film is now within reach of Rs 750 crore worldwide. The pace will depend on week-three holds and whether the Hindi version improves. If it does, Jailer 2 could set a target that other Tamil franchises will be measured against for years.
Produced by Sun Pictures, the film stars Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, with Anirudh Ravichander scoring and an ensemble including S J Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Ramya Krishnan.
