Udta Teer improved every day across its opening weekend, but the Sunday peak also exposes the work ahead. The Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan spy comedy collected Rs 8.10 crore in India net on Sunday from 6,020 shows, its highest single-day figure so far.
Sunday delivers the first real test result
Sunday’s India net rose 11.7% over Saturday’s Rs 7.25 crore. The film opened at Rs 4.10 crore on Friday, so the three-day India net stands at Rs 19.45 crore. Domestic gross is Rs 23.08 crore, while Rs 1.75 crore in overseas collections on Sunday lifted the international gross to Rs 4.50 crore. Total worldwide gross is now Rs 27.58 crore.
The direction of travel is encouraging: up on Saturday, up again on Sunday. But the base remains modest for a wide release running more than 6,000 shows a day.
Occupancy tells the sharper story
Here is where media planners and exhibitors should focus. Overall occupancy moved from 13% on Friday to 21% on Saturday and 25% on Sunday. The Hindi 2D version did better, at 35.91% occupancy on Sunday, but the day-part split shows demand is concentrated.
- Evening: 47.08% occupancy
- Afternoon: 39.54%
- Night: 37.46%
- Morning: 12.08%
For a film that needs families and younger audiences to turn up, morning shows running at 12% is a clear signal that marketing has not yet converted awareness into early-day footfalls.
The framework: weekend bump vs weekday hold
A Sunday jump is normal. The more meaningful number arrives next: Monday’s hold against Friday’s Rs 4.10 crore. If weekday collections fall sharply, the opening weekend total will look like the ceiling, not the floor. If they hold even moderately, the theatrical run can extend, especially with the lead cast’s multiplex pull.
Ticket sales data supports a cautious reading. The film sold 361,245 tickets on Sunday, taking total footfalls to 866,929. That is solid reach, but it has not yet translated into packed houses across the day.
Directed by Aakash Kaushik in his debut, and featuring Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover and others, Udta Teer also marks Mukul Dev’s second posthumous screen appearance. Those casting notes may help long-tail discovery, but the box office outcome will be decided by the next four days.
For entertainment marketers, the Sunday occupancy split is the useful learning. Prime evening shows are doing the heavy lifting, so trade promotions and influencer content should be timed to the hours when audiences are already willing to book. Morning inventory needs either price support or a stronger reason to buy.
