Udta Teer: Rs 11.35 cr India net in two days

Ayushmann Khurrana’s Udta Teer took a meaningful step up on its first Saturday, but the step starts from a modest base.

Directed by debutant Aakash Kaushik, the Hindi action comedy casts Khurrana as Bilal Ahmad, a Pakistani intelligence operative who loses his memory in an explosion and starts operating as an Indian counter-terrorism officer. Sara Ali Khan plays a defence ministry finance official who is also his wife and colleague.

The film collected Rs 7.25 cr in India net on day two, a 76.8% increase over its Rs 4.10 cr opening, according to Sacnilk trade figures. That lifts the two-day India net to Rs 11.35 cr, with India gross at Rs 13.53 cr. Overseas gross added Rs 1.50 cr on Saturday to reach Rs 2.75 cr, putting worldwide gross at Rs 16.28 cr.

The jump in numbers

  • Saturday show count: 6,164, marginally below Friday’s 6,265.
  • Average collection per show: Rs 11,762.
  • Saturday footfalls: 317,835; two-day total 505,684.
  • Overall occupancy improved from 13.0% on Friday to 21.0% on Saturday.

The Hindi 2D version did better than the overall print, recording 29.70% occupancy on Saturday. Demand built through the day: morning shows were at 8.54%, afternoon 27.62%, evening 33.00% and night 42.69%.

What the curve tells media planners

For ScreenStat readers, the useful signal is not just the headline growth but where it came from. A 76.8% jump sounds strong, but it is a jump off a soft opening. The evening-heavy occupancy curve suggests urban, after-work audiences are turning up, while morning shows remain weak. For exhibitors, that means programming and marketing should follow the evening demand instead of spreading spend evenly across the day.

The next test

The weekend is not yet a verdict. Sunday’s collection and the Monday drop will show whether Saturday was word of mouth kicking in or a low-base correction. If Sunday holds near or above Saturday, the film has a better case for a stable first week. If it slips, the two-day total will look more like a soft opening than a breakout.
