Soori’s sea-action film Mandaadi crossed the ₹90-crore India gross mark on Monday, September 21, but the day itself was a reminder of how quickly weekend momentum fades. The film added ₹1.58 crore net across 3,446 shows, taking its India gross to ₹90.18 crore and India net to ₹77.13 crore, according to box office figures cited by The Times of India.
The second-weekend climb, then the Monday fall
The second weekend followed the expected upward curve, with a sharp correction on the first working day.
- Friday, September 18: ₹3.70 crore net, 24.4% occupancy, 3,346 shows
- Saturday, September 19: ₹6.55 crore net, 34.1% occupancy, 3,693 shows
- Sunday, September 20: ₹8.00 crore net, 38.8% occupancy, 3,865 shows
- Monday, September 21: ₹1.58 crore net, 19.2% occupancy, 3,446 shows
The Monday number is roughly 80% below Sunday’s ₹8.00 crore, while occupancy fell back under 20%. For a film that banked ₹57.30 crore net in its first week, the remaining question is whether weekdays can hold enough momentum to push the total higher before screens are reduced.
Tamil remains the main engine
The Tamil version delivered ₹1.25 crore of Monday’s ₹1.58 crore net — about 79% of the day — from 2,123 shows at 20.0% occupancy. The Telugu version accounted for ₹33 lakh from 1,323 shows at 18.0% occupancy.
For distributors, the split suggests Tamil audiences are still the core market. Telugu is contributing, but its lower occupancy gives exhibitors a reason to prune shows faster if the midweek trend does not improve.
Sardar 2: a much smaller run
Karthi’s Sardar 2 is not keeping pace in the same regional comparison. The film has recorded ₹18.50 crore India gross, ₹15.84 crore India net, and ₹23.35 crore worldwide, with overseas gross at ₹4.85 crore.
- India gross: ₹18.50 crore
- India net: ₹15.84 crore
- Worldwide gross: ₹23.35 crore
- Overseas gross: ₹4.85 crore
- Tamil version net: ₹10.90 crore
The second-weekend Tamil figures for Sardar 2 were ₹18 lakh, ₹25 lakh, and ₹32 lakh — all flagged as low in the reported collection data. Mandaadi’s Monday alone surpassed Sardar 2’s combined Tamil second-weekend total of ₹75 lakh by more than double.
What this means for the market
For media planners and film-business followers, the contrast is useful. Mandaadi is holding a multi-language theatrical run and crossing milestones, but the second-Monday correction is the number that determines whether it becomes a long-tail hit or a weekend-driven one. Sardar 2, meanwhile, is now a sharper case study in a sequel staying small despite an established star at the centre.
