Glee reboot lands at Disney+ and Hulu

Disney is placing a familiar bet: a musical catalogue that still streams is a franchise worth reviving. Disney+ and Hulu have greenlit a new Glee, with Ryan Murphy attached and 20th Television producing.

The original series ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015. It built a devoted younger-skewing audience around its show-choir storylines and its covers of pop standards. More than a decade after the premiere, the catalogue still averages 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

That listening number matters more than any pilot script detail for a streamer. It is a demand signal: people are still choosing the music, which lowers the discovery cost for a reboot. The new show will stream on both Disney+ and Hulu, giving Disney two windows to reach different subscriber segments.

A long-running fandom, not yet a cast

Disney shared no casting or plot details. Murphy said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that he had written the reboot script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, the original co-creators, and that he had spoken with about 10 former cast members.

“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members,” Murphy said. “It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

Lea Michele had already said publicly that she would follow Murphy into a reboot. Chris Colfer pointed to Naya Rivera’s death as a complication, and said fans would likely pressure him to return.

Why this is more than nostalgia

For entertainment marketers, Glee is a case study in catalogue-led revival. The streamer is not buying an unknown property; it is relaunching a title that arrives with pre-existing audiences, a soundtrack catalogue, and a fandom that has stayed active on streaming and social platforms.

  • Watch casting: returning cast members will be the first sentiment driver; expect announcements to be staged.
  • Watch the dual-platform plan: whether Disney debuts episodes weekly on Hulu and Disney+ or uses one as a catch-up window will signal its bundling strategy.
  • Watch the music: the reboot’s song choices will have to clear licences, so early soundtrack news will hint at the budget and target demo.

The legacy costs

The revival cannot ignore the original’s tragic history. Naya Rivera died in 2020 while saving her son. Cory Monteith died in 2013, and Mark Salling died in 2018 after legal trouble. That makes the marketing tone as important as the casting: the campaign will need to acknowledge loss without letting it define a show built on joy.

Disney is betting that a large, still-listening audience is enough to offset that complexity. The first test is not the premiere rating; it is whether the announcement converts 4.1 million monthly listeners into active viewers before filming even wraps.
