ZDF and ACT4 order Kari Skogland's Vigilant

German broadcaster ZDF and Icelandic producer ACT4 have greenlit Vigilant, a six-part English-language crime drama directed by Kari Skogland. Production is due to begin in Iceland on October 29.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson — ACT4 partner and actor known for Severance and Trapped — adapted the series from Skúli Sigurðsson’s novel Stóri bróðir. He co-wrote the scripts with Víkingur Kristjánsson, Anita Briem, Teitur Magnússon and Anna Gunndís Guðmundsdóttir.

The premise

The story follows a journalist investigating a self-proclaimed vigilante who targets sexual predators. She initially reads him as an advocate for victims, then begins to suspect his campaign is driven by revenge rather than justice. Her reporting fuels a nationwide debate, and the drama examines how far accountability can stretch when the justice system fails.

Why the structure matters

The financing and distribution are built for an international run. ACT4 is producing in coproduction with ZDF and ZDF Studios, which co-developed the series and will handle worldwide distribution outside the US. Los Angeles-based Zero Gravity will oversee US distribution, while Icelandic telecoms and media company Síminn has joined as the financing, broadcast and streaming partner.

That gives Vigilant an exclusive first window on Sjónvarp Símans Premium in Iceland, while keeping world sales with a distributor that can push English-language crime to public broadcasters and platforms.

Talent and track record

Skogland will direct all six episodes and serve as executive producer. She won a BAFTA and received an Emmy nomination for The Handmaid’s Tale, and directed Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Her other credits include The Loudest Voice and Smoke.

The project follows another ACT4-ZDF collaboration, Death of a Horse, commissioned by RÚV and ZDF through the New8 public broadcaster alliance and produced with Windlight Pictures; that series is scheduled to premiere in 2026.

What this tells the market

For media planners and entertainment marketers, Vigilant is a clear example of premium drama being packaged as a local-first, international-ready asset:

  • Local operator Síminn anchors financing and takes the Icelandic first window.
  • ZDF Studios holds world distribution outside the US; Zero Gravity takes the US.
  • English-language storytelling and an award-winning director reduce the usual subtitle and talent barriers.

The result is less dependence on a single global streamer to greenlight and finance a high-end crime series. Expect more European producers to use this split of territorial windows, public-broadcaster backing and a director with global credits to get ambitious genre projects funded.
