Malayalam cinema’s biggest production of the year is buying credibility the same way Bollywood’s war films have for the last decade: by hiring someone who has actually worn the uniform. Operation Ganga, the Mohanlal-led film directed by National Award winner Vishnu Mohan and produced by Gokulam Gopalan for Sree Gokulam Movies, has brought on Squadron Leader Varlin Panwar as military adviser, per Bollywood Hungama.
What the role actually covers
Panwar will advise the unit on combat manoeuvres and military sequences, with her input feeding into how the film stages its action and rescue set pieces. She has previously been associated with Safed Sagar, Border 2 and Fighter — in other words, the small pool of technicians the Hindi war genre now routinely draws from. The shoot is currently in progress.
The subject matter explains the hire. Operation Ganga takes its name and its plot from India’s real 2022 evacuation mission during the Russia-Ukraine war, which brought thousands of stranded Indian citizens, many of them students, back home. The film is built around the logistics and pressure of that evacuation rather than a conventional battlefield.
Why the crew list matters more than the cast list
For anyone tracking the economics of South Indian cinema, the technical credits on this film are the real story. This is not a Kerala-market crew:
- Cinematography: Miroslaw Kuba Brozek (Pushpa 1 & 2)
- Production design: Rajeevan (GOAT, Meiyazhagan, Amaran, Kathanar)
- Action: Sea Young Oh (Dhurandhar, Kill)
- Music: Shashwat Sachdev (Dhurandhar)
- Sound design: Bishwadeep Chatterjee (Uri, Padmaavat, 3 Idiots, Dhurandhar)
- VFX: K. V. Sanjit (Kantara)
- Editing: Shameer Mohammed
Costume director Melvy J (Lokah), makeup artist Ronex Xavier and production controller Rinny Divakar complete the line-up. Baiju Gopalan and V. C. Praveen are co-producers, with Krishnamoorthy as executive producer. The cast pairs Mohanlal with Arjun Rampal, Bhagyashri Borse, Parthiban and Adil Hussain.
Read that list as a budget statement. When a Malayalam production hires a Polish DOP, a Korean action director, a Hindi-film sound designer and a serving officer as adviser, it is not planning to recover its money from Kerala alone. It is being built for a multi-language theatrical release and a premium streaming valuation, and the crew credits are the pitch deck.
The realism premium
The military-adviser hire is a small line item with an outsized marketing function. Post-Uri, Indian audiences have been trained to reward films that look procedurally correct — the right hand signals, the right radio chatter, the right kit. Technical accuracy has become a genuine differentiator in a category crowded with flag-waving, and it also lowers the risk of the kind of online pile-on that can flatten a film’s second weekend.
There is a second, quieter benefit. Films dealing with real state operations need cooperation for access, locations and eventually certification. Having credentialed advisers attached from the shooting stage makes that conversation easier, and it makes the eventual sales pitch to streamers cleaner too.
What to watch next
For media planners and acquisition teams, three markers matter from here: whether the film is positioned as a multi-language release rather than a Malayalam original with dubs; the size of its satellite and digital pre-sale, which is where cast-plus-crew credentials get priced; and the release corridor it picks, since patriotic-event films depend heavily on holiday windows.
Mohanlal remains one of the few names in Indian cinema who can headline a film sold on scale rather than stardom alone. Operation Ganga is testing whether a Malayalam production house can assemble a pan-India technical package and price the film accordingly.
