Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s Udta Teer has nearly exhausted its Indian theatrical window. Trade estimates now put the film’s final domestic nett collection at around Rs 45.50 crore to Rs 46 crore.
The run never stabilised
Directed by Aakash Kaushik, the film opened at Rs 3.75 crore nett, collected roughly Rs 30 crore in its first week, then fell by nearly 50% in week two with Rs 15.20 crore added. That took the 14-day cume to Rs 45.20 crore.
Thursday brought only Rs 20 lakh as showcases were cut to about 200 screens because of the arrival of Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana. Pinkvilla estimates the film will add barely another crore from here.
What the trajectory reveals
- Week one: approximately Rs 30 crore nett
- Week two: Rs 15.20 crore, a near-50% drop
- Projected final: Rs 45.50 crore to Rs 46 crore
That puts Udta Teer below Ayushmann Khurrana’s previous release Pati Patni Aur Woh Do. Even if Ramayana had not taken screens, the film would have ended near Rs 50-55 crore, according to the trade estimate. That would still not change its flop status. The primary reason cited is mixed word-of-mouth.
Read the hold, not the opening
For media planners and film marketers, the opening total measures reach; the second-week hold measures the product. A drop of close to 50% is a warning that audiences are not recommending the film strongly enough, and paid media alone cannot reverse that.
When a title shows this pattern, the practical move is to cut high-cost media quickly and shift to recovery tactics such as fan screenings, review-led creative or word-of-mouth units. Holding premium inventory on a title audiences have rejected rarely changes the ending.
Why it matters for streaming and TV buyers
For streaming and satellite buyers, a theatrical flop does not automatically remove value, but it changes the pitch. The library window will lean on star pull and platform promotion rather than a hit narrative. With mixed word-of-mouth, acquisition and marketing teams should price the title against comparable underperformers, not against the lead cast’s best outings.
The screen squeeze mattered for the last few lakhs, but the verdict was already in. Distributors who track the second-week hold would have begun pulling back before Ramayana arrived. For the next mid-budget title, the leading indicator is not the opening day headline but whether week two keeps at least half of week one. Udta Teer missed that mark and is closing accordingly.
