Sony bets on 2.5M TikTok followers

Sony Pictures Television is taking a social-first route into animation development. The studio has signed Thea Von Engelbrechten, creator of the Moletown Drama accounts, to a multiyear first-look deal, and has set her first project, an animated microseries called Hazelwood, to premiere on YouTube on Friday, Nov. 13.

Von Engelbrechten arrives with 2.5 million TikTok followers and 1 million Instagram followers. That pre-built audience is the point: Sony is not acquiring just a format, but a creator who can bring viewers to a new platform window.

The deal

Under the agreement, Sony has first-look rights to develop and produce original series from Von Engelbrechten. The first title, Hazelwood, positions her as creator and producer.

Frank Ochoa, VP of adult animation at Sony Pictures Television, described her voice as “blending disarming charm with a sharp, irreverent sense of humor” and pointed to her ability to place endearing characters in inappropriate situations.

That voice was built during the pandemic, when Von Engelbrechten began making soap-style videos with Sylvanian Families animal figurines, sold as Calico Critters in the U.S. A copyright dispute with Japan-based Epoch, which owns the toy line, ended in a settlement; the accounts were renamed from Sylvanian Drama to Moletown Drama.

What Hazelwood is

Sony describes Hazelwood as a darkly comedic animated soap set in a woodland town where scandal, dysfunctional relationships and everyday suburban absurdity sit alongside darker turns. The cast includes recovering alcoholic Meadow, her husband Richard, popularity-obsessed neighbour Arabella, Pizza Mole and Scar.

The format is deliberately short. Each episode runs just a few minutes. New episodes go live on YouTube every Friday, then move to TikTok and Instagram on Sundays.

Why the model matters

For media planners and entertainment marketers, this is a studio test of short-form creator IP. Sony gets first rights to future projects while giving the creator a production home. The release schedule is a windowing experiment in miniature:

  • 2.5 million TikTok followers and 1 million Instagram followers arrive with the creator
  • Hazelwood premieres Friday, Nov. 13 on YouTube
  • New episodes roll out Fridays on YouTube, then Sundays on TikTok and Instagram
  • Sony retains first-look rights on future series from Von Engelbrechten

The playbook is not new inside Sony. The studio previously signed YouTube creators Adam and Craig Malamut, whose path led them to the Fox animated series Universal Basic Guys. Von Engelbrechten is the latest test of whether social-born creators can become repeatable TV suppliers.

For teams watching engagement, the key metric is audience transfer: do TikTok and Instagram viewers follow the show to YouTube, and does the Sunday social window add incremental reach or simply spread the same audience across three platforms?

What to watch next

The first few Fridays will show whether a built-in fanbase converts to a dedicated premiere habit. If it does, expect more first-look deals structured around creators with measurable social reach. Sony is already widening its pipeline with a Creator Access Day on Friday, Oct. 23, giving creators access to a slate that includes Hazelwood and Universal Basic Guys.
