What Snäxx is
Snäxx is the latest European microdrama app from Germany’s Black Forest Studios, with a formal launch set for November 1 on iOS and Android. The service enters with 16 completed series and a board that includes media, entertainment, technology and investment executives; actor Boris Kodjoe is among its advisors.
The positioning problem
The platform claims to be “Europe’s first premium microdrama platform,” though the source notes rival services have already launched in the UK and France. Black Forest’s differentiation is less about being first and more about changing the product definition: Snäxx is being framed as part of “a new European content ecosystem,” not simply a short-form app.
That matters for buyers because microdrama has largely grown on high-volume, low-cost mobile-first productions. Snäxx says it wants to replace those with higher-end stories built around “European creativity” and “global ambition.” The company is aiming for a different cost and quality tier, which could attract advertisers and platform buyers who have been wary of cheap vertical content’s brand safety and completion rates.
For media planners, this is also a signal that vertical video is moving beyond user-generated clips and into serialized, professionally produced content. If Snäxx can deliver dual-format assets, campaigns can be planned once and adapted across mobile and television environments instead of being produced separately.
Launch slate and formats
The initial lineup includes Black Forest Royale, a drama about an aristocratic German-American patchwork family in a Black Forest castle; Guts, a high-speed thriller; and Mountain Medical, a drama compared to Schwarzwald Klinik. Snäxx will also carry selected content from independent producers, studios and rights holders.
One structural feature is its dual-format strategy. Content can play vertically on mobile and in 16:9 for television, streaming and other horizontal services. This gives distribution partners more than a single window and gives the platform a broader potential licensing story.
- Launch date: November 1 on iOS and Android.
- Launch slate: 16 completed series, plus selected third-party content.
- Dual format: vertical mobile and 16:9 horizontal output.
- Re:Format: a pipeline for repurposing existing film and TV content for vertical.
Supply-side pitch
Snäxx is actively inviting European and international producers, distributors and rights holders to pitch microdrama content. Co-founder Sebastian Weiland said Europe has “extraordinary writers, producers, actors, studios and IP” and that what has been missing is a platform built specifically to turn that into premium mobile entertainment.
Black Forest Studios operates a production facility in Freiburg and was built as one of Europe’s first production houses specifically for microdrama. It offers in-house development, production, post-production and delivery, using what the company calls AI-supported workflows and a highly efficient pipeline for serialized short-form storytelling. That operational line may be the real moat: if production costs can stay controlled while quality rises, a premium microdrama slate becomes economically viable.
Why it matters
For rights holders, Re:Format is the most commercially interesting piece. It creates a mechanism to repurpose underused film or TV assets for vertical platforms, potentially adding a new revenue window without a full remake. For media planners, Snäxx’s dual-format promise reduces the either/or choice between mobile and television inventory.
The wider vertical video space was recently valued at $150 million by Hernan Lopez’s Owl & Co., excluding China, where the microdrama format originated. That is not a massive number by streaming standards, but it signals a growing specialization. Snäxx’s real test will be whether its premium-cost model can deliver retention in a category built on very fast consumption.
