Sigma Day 5: Rs 6.98 cr India net as weekday drop narrows

Five days after its October 2 release, Jason Sanjay’s Tamil heist action comedy Sigma has collected Rs 6.98 crore net in India, with gross at Rs 7.93 crore. Tuesday added Rs 79 lakh from 1,439 shows, according to Sacnilk data published by The Times of India – a 6% drop from Monday’s Rs 84 lakh.

The debut film—Sanjay is the son of actor Vijay—has drawn mixed reviews, with Sundeep Kishan’s lead performance among the praised elements. For the box office, the more useful number is not the total but the weekday trend.

The weekday is steadier than the opening weekend

Sigma opened with Rs 2.35 crore on day one across 1,813 shows at 31.1% occupancy. It collected Rs 1.50 crore on days two and three, before falling to Rs 84 lakh on Monday and Rs 79 lakh on Tuesday.

That puts the first three days at Rs 5.35 crore, roughly 77% of the five-day total. The Monday decline from Sunday was 44%, but Monday to Tuesday narrowed to 6%. Exhibitors also trimmed the release—1,520 shows on Monday versus 1,439 on Tuesday—yet overall occupancy stayed flat at 17.5%.

That is a demand map, not a collapse. The audience is sticking around at the same per-show rate on a smaller footprint.

The language split flips mid-week

Day 5 produced a notable shift: the Telugu version out-earned the Tamil version, taking Rs 44 lakh from 773 shows against Rs 35 lakh from 666 shows. Occupancy was 18.0% for Telugu and 17.0% for Tamil.

For a film marketed to both audiences, the split matters. If Telugu demand continues to lead, next-weekend inventory and marketing weight should follow it.

Daypart data shows where the audience sits

The Tamil 2D version’s occupancy tells a sharp story. Afternoon shows held at 18.33%, but evening shows crashed to 7.42%. Tamil night shows recovered to 15.83%; morning shows recorded 17.33%. The Telugu version was steadier by comparison but lower overall.

  • Tamil afternoon: 18.33% occupancy
  • Tamil evening: 7.42% occupancy
  • Tamil night: 15.83% occupancy
  • Telugu overall: 14.42% occupancy

For media planners and distributors, that is an operational lever. It may be wiser to shift some shows to afternoon or night slots where demand is demonstrably higher, rather than spend to prop up weak evening shows.

The star-kid debut is not a breakout by any standard, and ETimes’s 2.5-star review suggests no easy critical lift. But the data says the weekday audience has not abandoned it.
