Netflix US has quietly added both seasons of Schooled, the short-lived ABC sitcom that ran from 2019 to 2020 before cancellation after 34 episodes.
The series — a 1990s-set spin-off of The Goldbergs — centers on the faculty at William Penn Academy. AJ Michalka returns as Lainey Lewis, now the school’s music teacher, alongside Tim Meadows as Principal Glascott, Bryan Callen as Coach Mellor and Brett Dier as C.B.
Not part of the Disney package
The pickup looks like another tail of the recent Disney-Netflix licensing agreement covering ABC titles such as Will Trent and Shifting Gears. It is not.
While Schooled aired on Disney-owned ABC, production and distribution sat with Sony Pictures Television. Sony operates, in the source’s words, as a neutral “arms dealer” in the streaming wars — no walled-garden service of its own to feed — so it licenses its catalog to the highest bidder.
Why it matters
The move fits the long-tail economics now driving Netflix’s licensed sitcom strategy. Canceled broadcast comedies are cheap to acquire, arrive with built-in nostalgia, and often find larger audiences on streaming than they ever reached on linear. Schooled now gets that second window.
- 34 episodes across two seasons
- Produced and distributed by Sony Pictures Television
- Not part of the Disney-Netflix ABC slate
The pickup also deepens Netflix’s existing Sony relationship, which already includes the Pay-1 window for Sony’s theatrical films. For media planners, the practical reminder is simpler: a title’s network of origin does not decide its streaming home. The distributor does.
The Goldbergs question — and a title collision
Fans hoping this signals The Goldbergs is coming to Netflix should temper expectations. The parent comedy remains exclusive to Hulu in the US for now. Sony’s openness to moving Schooled, though, keeps the door ajar for future catalog deals.
Subscribers should also note a different Schooled is headed to Netflix: an unscripted series from former NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober. The two titles share a name and nothing else.
