Diwali has split the Tamil box office into two very different films. After two days of live estimates, Suriya’s Scene has raced to Rs 24.03 crore net in India, while Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 is still working through a much smaller base at Rs 2.41 crore net.
Where the films stand
Scene collected Rs 19.15 crore net on day one from 6,167 shows across Tamil and Telugu, taking its opening-day domestic gross to Rs 22.25 crore. The Tamil version delivered Rs 16.15 crore and the Telugu version added Rs 3 crore. By early day two, the film had added another Rs 4.88 crore, with Rs 4.07 crore from 1,557 Tamil shows and Rs 81 lakh from 415 Telugu shows. Its running domestic gross sits at Rs 28.01 crore.
Mookuthi Amman 2 earned Rs 1.88 crore net on day one, with an India gross of Rs 2.15 crore. The Tamil version contributed Rs 1.75 crore and the Telugu version added Rs 13 lakh. On day two, early estimates are Rs 53 lakh, with Rs 49 lakh from 588 Tamil shows, Rs 4 lakh from 71 Telugu shows and Kannada collections yet to report. Its running total is Rs 2.41 crore net and Rs 2.78 crore gross.
- Scene: Rs 19.15 crore day one + Rs 4.88 crore day two live = Rs 24.03 crore net.
- Mookuthi Amman 2: Rs 1.88 crore day one + Rs 53 lakh day two live = Rs 2.41 crore net.
- Show count so far on day two: Scene 1,972 shows; Mookuthi Amman 2 666 shows.
What the numbers say about demand
The show-count gap is the clearer business signal. Scene opened with 6,167 shows, giving it screen dominance from day one; on day two, the early count is 1,972 shows to Mookuthi’s 666. Exhibitors do not give away screens out of loyalty—they follow advance sales and occupancy. Right now, the Tamil-speaking audience is leaning strongly toward Scene.
That does not make Mookuthi Amman 2 a write-off. It is a sequel to the 2020 original and stars Nayanthara in the divine central role; the film has a Kannada version that has yet to report, so its full footprint is not yet visible. But an opening of Rs 1.88 crore leaves it needing a strong Saturday and Sunday hold.
Why the weekend matters
Both films entered cinemas on Friday, November 6. The first Saturday and Sunday will show whether Scene can broaden beyond its opening fan base and whether Mookuthi Amman 2 gets any festival-driven recovery. All day-two figures are live and subject to change, with final collections expected tonight.
For media planners and content buyers, the useful read is not just the headline total. Watch the language split and show count. A film that holds screens through the weekend has a stronger downstream window story than one that opens on star power and loses exhibitor confidence quickly.
