RTL Deutschland’s bet on YouTube is paying off in a way that matters for any broadcaster or media planner trying to make old library content work again. The German broadcaster says its 1996 action series Cobra 11 drew 30 million views after it uploaded more than 200 full episodes to YouTube a year ago.
The audience it reached is not the typical legacy linear viewer: 83% of the YouTube viewers are men, with an average age of 30. RTL chief executive Stephan Schmitter said that was the bet—young men also love big stunts, flying cars, big explosions and the German Autobahn
.
YouTube reach becomes an RTL+ conversion event
The most useful signal is not the YouTube view count alone. It is what happened on RTL’s owned streaming service. The broadcaster says first video views for Cobra 11 on RTL+ rose 123%, and subscriptions linked to the show rose 26%.
- 200+ full episodes uploaded to YouTube a year ago.
- 30 million YouTube views generated.
- 83% of viewers are men; average age 30.
- 123% rise in first video views on RTL+.
- 26% rise in subscriptions linked to Cobra 11.
That is a measurable funnel: YouTube supplies reach for a title with little linear repeat value left, and RTL+ captures the conversion. For media planners, it is a working example of library content as a top-of-funnel acquisition tool.
Advertising inventory becomes a 360-degree sale
The commercial upside goes beyond subscriptions. RTL’s ad sales arm Ad Alliance packages inventory across linear television, RTL+, Sky and YouTube. Schmitter said the broadcaster can now offer advertisers a 360-degree proposition
that works on the big screen because it is only one switch away
, and he cited near double-digit millions
in additional revenue.
YouTube’s TV-screen consumption is part of why this matters. The platform is no longer only a mobile distraction; it is a direct competitor on the television set. Partnerships like this reframe it as a distribution and ad-revenue layer that feeds existing IP.
Other broadcasters are running the same play
RTL is not alone. France Télévisions has a deal to bring about 20,000 hours of content a year to YouTube, and its news channel franceinfo hit 110 million YouTube views in September, eight times more than a year earlier. RTL has also put its news channel NTV on the platform, which Schmitter frames as important for reaching a broader public at a time of political polarization in Germany.
YouTube VP for EMEA Pedro Pina called this a self-reinforcing partnership that can only produce value
, feeding IP that was already successful. The strategic takeaway for streaming and TV professionals: treat YouTube as a reach and ad-inventory layer, but attach conversion metrics to the owned platform. Otherwise, the view count is just a vanity number.
