Prime Video Cancels Ride Or Die After One Season

Prime Video has opted not to renew Ride Or Die, Deadline reports, with lead studio Paramount Television Studios now shopping the Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer action comedy to other buyers. The cancellation follows a run of domestic and global numbers that would normally anchor a renewal case.

A No. 1 debut, then a bigger second week

Launched July 15, Ride Or Die opened with 927,000 U.S. views in its first two days on Luminate — roughly double Elle and nearly four times Off Campus. It moved to No. 1 in U.S. minutes watched in its first full week and sustained that trend through week three.

Nielsen shows the same trajectory. The series entered the overall streaming chart at No. 8 with 869 million minutes, then climbed to No. 4 overall and No. 2 among originals with 922 million minutes in its second week. Over its first 14 days, Deadline reports, it was Prime Video’s most watched new scripted series in the U.S. within the prior one-year window. Globally, it ranked as Prime Video’s most watched original for its first three weeks.

Critics and audiences also aligned: 96% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, 85% from audiences.

Why the renewal math broke differently

For streaming and media professionals, the takeaway is that demand is only one variable. Ride Or Die was part of what Deadline calls the current wave of “white wine thrillers” — adult female-led series — but its completion rate was in range with renewed Prime Video titles such as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Scarpetta and Elle. The difference is structural.

  • Marketing asymmetry: the show launched with a fraction of the spend behind Prime Video’s YA slate, yet outperformed several renewed titles.
  • Lead studio economics: Paramount Television Studios led the project, with Amazon MGM among producers, which may change platform upside.
  • A clean comparable: Peacock renewed The Five Star Weekend, a similarly positioned July launch with strong female-led demand, while Prime Video went the other way.

Created by Tessa Coates, Ride Or Die follows best friends whose relationship is upended when one is revealed to be an international assassin. Season one ended on multiple cliffhangers, giving any new buyer a built-in narrative engine — but also a show that must be re-launched outside its original platform’s data system.

The next signal to track is where Paramount Television Studios lands the title. If a rival streamer picks it up, it becomes a real-world test of how much of this audience travels with the IP versus with the platform.
