Malaysia's RM68.2M animated hit hits Netflix US Dec 1

Malaysia’s highest-grossing animated film is finally getting a US window. Monsta Studios’ Papa Zola The Movie will stream on Netflix in the United States on December 1, 2026, nearly a year after it broke box-office records in Southeast Asia. The same first-of-the-month slot covers the United Kingdom, and Netflix plans to offer the original Malay audio alongside the English dub at launch.

A record built in cinemas

The film opened in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei in December 2025 and took RM 68.2 million at the box office. That result made it the highest-grossing Malaysian animated film of all time. It is a standalone feature set in Monsta’s BoBoiBoy universe, built around the fan-favourite character Papa Zola—a self-proclaimed “Lover of Truth”. Monsta CEO Nizam Razak wrote, directed and produced the film, and also voices the lead.

The voice cast includes Noor Ieesya Isandra as Pipi Zola, Noor Ezdiani Ahmad Fawzi as Mama Zila, Yusuf Bahrin as Kachax Khan and Aloeng Silalahi as YonB, with appearances by BoBoiBoy universe regulars Nurfathiah Diaz and Dzubir Mohammed Zakaria. For fans of the wider franchise, that casting is part of the draw.

Family comedy with a sci-fi engine

Netflix’s official logline sets up the film as a family action-comedy with a clear hook:

“When invading aliens kidnap his daughter, a doting dad must don the mask of his secret-agent past to save her — and foil their plan for world domination.”

Papa Zola is living a quiet life as a food delivery rider with his wife, Mama Zila, and daughter, Pipi, until the alien threat pulls him back into his operative past. The premise gives both parents and kids a familiar entry point, which matters when the title is competing with first-of-the-month additions in the holiday window.

Why the US wait took this long

The film has actually been on Netflix since July 1, 2026, but only in a hard regional window: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan and South Korea. An English-dubbed international trailer arrived in August, but Western subscribers had no date until now.

  • December 2025: Theatrical release in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei; RM 68.2 million box office.
  • July 1, 2026: Netflix rollout limited to six Asian libraries.
  • December 1, 2026: US and UK debut, with Malay and English audio expected.

The staggered path is common for licensed international animation. Buyers get to test a title in its strongest home region before committing to a wider push, and Papa Zola arrives with that regional box-office proof already in hand.

What it means for screen businesses

For streamers and media planners, the lesson is simple: regional theatrical performance is becoming a demand signal for global acquisition. A RM 68.2 million home-market result gives Netflix a pre-sold family title with built-in fan awareness, while the English dub removes the most obvious accessibility barrier for American audiences.

It also follows Dongeng Sang Kancil, another Malaysian animated pickup Netflix streamed last year. That pipeline suggests the platform is supplementing Hollywood family content with cheaper, proven local animation rather than relying on a narrow slate of big-budget originals.

The open question is whether Southeast Asian fandom converts to meaningful US viewing hours, or whether the title mainly adds catalogue depth. For teams tracking holiday watch-time, the first week of December will be the number to watch.
