Universal’s Other Mommy took the U.K. and Ireland box office crown this weekend, but the number that matters is £33,263. That was the entire gap between first and second place in a photo finish between two adult-skewing thrillers playing to near-identical audiences.
The Rob Savage-directed horror, starring Jessica Chastain and Jay Duplass, opened at No. 1 with £1.97 million ($2.66 million). Sony’s Verity, the Colleen Hoover adaptation now in its second weekend, collected £1.94 million ($2.62 million) to hold second place. Verity has now reached £7.3 million ($9.8 million) in the market.
Why a hair’s-breadth win matters
For distributors and media buyers, this is less a victory lap than a screen-allocation signal. Verity is a holdover and nearly overtook a fresh wide opener, which says its second-weekend audience is still converting. Other Mommy won the rank, but a sub-£2 million debut means it is not yet a breakout on raw numbers.
- Second-weekend strength: Verity closed to within £33,263 of a new opener.
- Cume is the better read: Verity has £7.3 million against Other Mommy‘s £1.97 million start.
- Franchise depth: Resident Evil reached $17.1 million in four sessions.
The rest of the top ten
Paramount’s Heart of the Beast held third with $1.1 million in its third frame, lifting its total to $7.3 million. Sony’s Resident Evil reboot added $1 million in fourth place for a $17.1 million running gross, and Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning opened fifth with $840,538.
Universal’s Sense and Sensibility added $797,038 for $6.8 million in total. The Uprising opened seventh with $732,547, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom took $665,849 for $5.1 million, Digger added $661,819 for $3 million, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey collected $353,321 in its 13th weekend to reach $118.3 million.
What to do with this
Opening rank can hide a soft gross. The commercial question is whether Verity continues to hold when Disney’s survival thriller Whalefall, Paramount’s Street Fighter and the filmed Hadestown capture arrive across 300-plus locations on Friday. A strong second-weekend hold into fresh wide competition is the more useful indicator of a title’s staying power.
The top ten splits into three arcs: franchise and holdover titles are carrying the chart, new adult dramas are opening modestly, and repertory or event releases are widening the older-audience menu. That mix matters for planners trying to allocate budgets against a crowded Friday slate.
