Alien Adds Aaron Guzikowski as New Film Writer

20th Century Studios is adding to the Alien universe. A new film is in early development with Ridley Scott producing and Aaron Guzikowski writing the script.

What’s happening

Scott is producing through Scott Free with Michael Pruss. No director is attached and plot details are being kept under wraps. The Hollywood Reporter first reported that the project is tied to the two Alien films Scott most recently directed: 2012’s Prometheus and 2017’s Alien: Covenant. J.R. Young is overseeing the project for 20th Century Studios.

Guzikowski and Scott have worked together before. Guzikowski created the HBO Max series Raised by Wolves and wrote 2013’s Prisoners, directed by Denis Villeneuve. The pairing gives the film a known creative shorthand rather than a cold start.

Why the prequel thread matters

The franchise has long split between the original Alien horror line and the philosophical prequel lane Scott opened with Prometheus. A new script tied to those two films signals the studio is still willing to build out that branch instead of returning to a clean slate.

TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde previously wrote that Alien: Covenant was a direct follow-up to Prometheus and leaned into “scary stuff.” That dual identity, mythology plus creature horror, is the creative challenge the new writer inherits.

What this means for the business

Known IP remains a strong development bet because an Alien title arrives with built-in global awareness. Attaching a writer early also gives the project a credible creative anchor for talent and financing conversations. But early development has a high attrition rate: until a director signs and a greenlight follows, this is a development asset rather than a confirmed release.

For studios, direction matters. If the film continues the Prometheus thread, it inherits an existing but divided fanbase. If it resets, marketing can reintroduce the franchise to younger audiences. That choice will shape casting, campaign positioning and the audience the film chases.

Guzikowski’s slate confirms the demand for his work:

  • Writing an original sci-fi film for director Jon Watts at 20th Century
  • Adapting a Philip K. Dick short story for Sony Pictures
  • Writing an animated Death Stranding adaptation based on Hideo Kojima’s game

There is no cast or release window yet, so this is a pipeline signal, not an immediate campaign. The next Alien installment will have to decide how much Prometheus mythology to carry and how much to leave behind.
