Netflix reverses Bad Dinosaurs cancellation, orders two seasons

Netflix has reversed course on Bad Dinosaurs, ordering Seasons 2 and 3 of the CG-animated preschool series after previously deciding not to continue the show. Each new season will include eight episodes, a rare resurrection for a title Netflix had seemingly left behind.

Executive producer Paul Schleicher had described the original cancellation as a consequence of a streaming market that no longer prioritized unproven originals. “The world of streaming has shifted,” he said on the Kids Media Club Podcast. The new order suggests the show’s audience became too large to ignore.

The data behind the U-turn

Netflix’s engagement metrics tell a consistent story. The series spent five weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10. Since its 2024 debut, Season 1 has accumulated approximately 54.4 million views, or 154.1 million viewing hours, according to Netflix’s engagement reports. Those reports translate total viewing hours into an estimated view count, making it easier to compare titles.

YouTube added another signal. On the Netflix Jr. channel, the full episode “The Sliming / Sound Bite / Failure to Lunch” has surpassed 11 million views, and a Baby T-Rex compilation has crossed 5.1 million. For a preschool franchise, that off-platform reach can act as a low-cost audience proxy and a renewal argument.

Where this fits in Netflix’s kids strategy

The Bad Dinosaurs renewal was announced as part of a broader kids-and-family slate update. Netflix said kids and family viewing made up 15% of its total view hours in the first half of 2024, so the company is investing in established characters and familiar formats.

  • A new Sesame Street film is in development, and the series deal now runs through Season 62.
  • Gabby’s Dollhouse expands with Doozie’s Doghouse on November 9 and a holiday special on December 9.
  • Puppy Pirates, a new series from Matthew Fernandes, joins the slate.
  • Netflix Playground adds mobile games for Trash Truck, Numberblocks and KPop Demon Hunters.

What marketers should watch

The reversal matters because Netflix rarely reopens cancellation decisions. It shows that renewal analysis can include YouTube reach and franchise potential, not just internal streams. For producers and media buyers, the implication is to track a title’s full distribution footprint, especially for children’s content where YouTube is often the first discovery point for parents.

The next data point is whether Bad Dinosaurs’ two-season order creates a larger franchise opportunity: more merchandising, more YouTube compilations and a longer shelf life for Netflix’s preschool library.
