Netflix Renews Lock Upp After 50M Monthly Hours

Netflix is taking its Indian captive-reality experiment back inside the jail. A second season of Lock Upp: Sach Yaa Sazaa has been confirmed, with hosts Riteish Deshmukh and Farah Khan returning and Balaji Telefilms back as producer.

Ekta Kapoor will produce alongside Shobha Kapoor and Manisha Sharma, with Malaya Pradhan as showrunner. The format originally launched on ALTBalaji and MX Player in 2022 before Netflix rebooted it for a new audience.

A breakout measured in weeks, not days

Season 1 became the number one title on Netflix’s TV shows list within two days of its premiere and held a top-ten place for seven straight weeks. Netflix said it expanded the weekly drop from five episodes to six to satisfy demand.

What drove the numbers

The show places Indian celebrities in a jail-like setting and asks them to compete in challenges. The audience stickiness came from a different kind of contest: contestants confronting public narratives about themselves. Netflix India VP of Content Monika Shergill called it “appointment viewing” and said the format gave celebrities room to own their decisions and address past trauma.

For streaming executives, that is the more important signal. A reality hit that delivers a launch spike is common; a format that holds for seven weeks while adding an extra episode is a retention engine.

  • Season 1 logged 50 million hours viewed in a month.
  • It reached No. 1 in two days and stayed in the top ten for seven weeks.
  • Netflix expanded weekly drops from five episodes to six on demand.

What Season 2 tests

The hosts and producing team returning lowers one kind of risk, but the franchise bet sits with the new cast. Netflix is not just ordering more episodes; it is testing whether a local non-fiction format can become repeatable IP.

For media planners, the renewal turns Lock Upp into a tentpole to build weekly reach around, not just a launch-day conversation. For content teams, 50 million hours in a month is a useful benchmark for India’s non-fiction scale. For brands, the show’s appeal is celebrities discussing perception and accountability, which sits naturally next to purpose-led or redemption campaigns.

The renewal also tells buyers something about cadence. With weekly drops expanding, the show functions like appointment television on a streaming service, which is rare and valuable for advertisers looking for sustained placements rather than binge-and-churn titles. For Netflix India, the win matters beyond one title: a homegrown reality format that scaled from ALTBalaji and MX Player to Netflix is a case study in local IP without losing its regional edge.

Season 2’s job is different from Season 1’s. The first season had surprise on its side. The second has to prove the format works without it.
