Netflix has greenlit an untitled Bridgerton limited series that will trace the early life of Lady Violet Bridgerton and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. Shondaland will produce, and Shonda Rhimes is set to write, executive produce and co-showrun with Nicholas Nardini.
On the flagship series, Lady Violet is played by Ruth Gemmell. The new project is based on Julia Quinn’s Violet in Bloom, a novella that tells the love story of Violet and Edmund. Tom Verica returns as director and executive producer, with Shondaland’s Betsy Beers also executive producing.
What’s confirmed
- Untitled limited series about young Lady Violet and Edmund Bridgerton.
- Shonda Rhimes writing and co-showrunning with Nicholas Nardini.
- Source material: Julia Quinn’s Violet in Bloom.
- Tom Verica directing and executive producing; Betsy Beers executive producing.
The Queen Charlotte template
After Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story launched in May 2023, it briefly cracked Netflix’s Most Popular English series list. The limited series featured older versions of Charlotte, Lady Danbury and Violet, which quickly made the other two characters prime candidates for their own prequels. Since Lady Danbury’s romantic arc was already folded into Queen Charlotte, Violet looked like the next logical lead.
The new prequel uses the same limited-series structure. On Queen Charlotte, Rhimes wrote all but one episode; Nardini wrote one episode and co-wrote another with Rhimes. This also marks Rhimes’ first credited writing project since she created and executive produced Queen Charlotte.
Why the franchise math matters
The greenlight is a signal of how Netflix and Shondaland are managing the franchise between main seasons. Bridgerton Seasons 1 and 3 remain on Netflix’s Most Popular list at #7 and #10, and Season 5, centered on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling, is in production in London. Netflix has also built a dedicated UK studio for Shondaland to shoot the series.
The franchise has become lucrative beyond streaming, with revenue from consumer products and live experiences. For media planners and entertainment marketers, a side-character prequel is a retention bridge: it keeps subscribers engaged when the flagship show is between cycles and creates new hooks for merchandising and events.
What to watch next
The Violet prequel is likely to be the first series greenlit under Rhimes’ new long-term Netflix deal signed in August. The test for the franchise is how many Queen Charlotte-style character stories it can support without diluting the core property.
