Netflix borrows Filmin's taste for a monthly film shelf

Netflix is borrowing editorial taste from a much smaller player. In Spain, the platform has begun adding a monthly shelf of films and documentaries selected by Filmin, the independent Spanish streamer known for its specialist cinema audience.

The mechanics

Starting today, Netflix members in Spain will see a dedicated collection titled October Mysteries, timed to Halloween. A new collection of 10 titles, licensed and selected by Filmin, will be added on the first day of every month.

  • Monthly refresh: 10 titles land on the first day of each month.
  • Overlap: the previous month’s collection stays available for one more month.
  • Seasonal themes: mystery for Halloween now, award-friendly films around the Academy Awards later.

Why this deal matters

The arrangement is essentially a licensing-and-curation layer bolted onto Netflix’s catalog. Netflix does not have to commission originals or build a niche film brand itself; it gets a credible, editorially selected slate. Filmin gets its titles in front of Netflix’s far larger Spanish audience.

Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of content for Spain, Portugal and Turkey, called the companies “perfect partners,” arguing that Filmin’s relationship with a discerning audience complements Netflix’s goal of entertaining the broadest possible audience. Juan Carlos Tous, CEO and founder of Filmin, called the deal “enormous recognition” of nearly 20 years of work.

What media planners should watch

For streaming and entertainment marketers, this is a discovery mechanics story. The recurring monthly drop creates appointment viewing around calendar moments. The one-month overlap means the shelf never goes empty and gives a returning viewer an easy reason to browse again.

The real test is whether this curated shelf changes retention and viewing behaviour in Spain. If it does, expect more platforms to treat specialist curation as a low-cost alternative to another all-new original slate.
