Movistar Plus sets weekly Spanish film slate for 2027

San Sebastián: Movistar Plus has put Spanish-language film and limited series at the centre of its 2027 pitch, previewing a slate built around known directors, local stories and a weekly film release commitment.

The presentation, led by CEO Alfonso Gómez Palacio and director of content Juan Andrés García Ropero at the San Sebastián Film Festival, was light on performance data but heavy on supply signals.

What the 2027 slate includes

Among the announced projects:

  • The Castaway: a comedy series written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa, starring Belén Cuesta and David Verdaguer, and produced by León, Jaume Roures and Patricia de Muns.
  • Untitled 1991 Barcelona Olympics series: created by Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor, a fictionalised account of preparations for the Barcelona Olympics opening ceremony, produced with Charlie Pisco Producciones and Kubik Films.
  • Two non-fiction features executive-produced by JA Bayona: announced without specific titles or formats.
  • Additional film and series projects: A Family Visit directed by Sandra Romero, 250 Meters directed by Daniel Monzón, and a Moriartis series produced by Carles Porta with Anna Castillo, Pol López and Eduard Fernández attached.

The commitment that changes media planning

The most actionable element for platform-watchers is Movistar Plus’s plan to debut one new Spanish film every week on its platform in 2027. That cadence gives buyers and marketers a predictable content window, rather than a one-off splash. It also positions the service as a recurring home for Spanish theatrical and streaming titles, even as global platforms chase the same audience.

The executive team framed the move as a responsibility rather than a pure commercial bet. Ropero said the company is looking for “projects with quality, personality, and a unique perspective” and wants “stories that no one else dares to tell,” as quoted by Deadline.

Why this matters for our audience

For media planners, the slate is a reminder that local-language supply is becoming a retention lever. A weekly film event can support always-on campaigns, sponsorship packages and predictable audience segments. For entertainment marketers, names such as Bayona, León de Aranoa and Monzón are the campaign assets; the platform is signalling that it will package director-led Spanish content as premium inventory.

The missing numbers are notable. Movistar Plus did not share subscriber figures, viewership benchmarks, completion rates or content budgets. That keeps the announcement in brand-building territory. Teams evaluating the slate should treat it as a supply-side signal, not yet a performance case.
