Disney Sets 'Moana' Live-Action Remake for Oct 21 Disney+ Debut

Disney has given its live-action Moana a streaming berth: the remake will hit Disney+ on Oct. 21, putting a family title with broad co-viewing appeal into the platform’s fourth-quarter schedule.

What’s known about the film

Catherine Laga’aia makes her film debut as the titular voyager, with Dwayne Johnson returning as the demigod Maui. Thomas Kail directs, from a screenplay by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, with songs by Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The ensemble includes Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina and Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa; Pua, Heihei, the Kakamora and Te Kā also appear.

The review that changes the pitch

Disney’s live-action remakes tend to be framed as financial engineering rather than creative bets. This one is being reviewed differently. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman wrote that the film “escapes the Disney live-action remake blues—in fact, it soars above them,” and called it “the best of these movies I’ve seen.” His review goes further: for the first time in this remake cycle, he would be comfortable with a child who had never seen the animated original starting with the new version.

That is not just a critical nicety. For Disney+, a critic quote that says the remake truly delivers Moana gives the platform a cleaner acquisition hook than the usual nostalgia-plus-VFX framing. Family content decisions are often co-viewing decisions; a strong review lowers the parental trial barrier.

What media teams should track

The Oct. 21 date turns this into a measurable streaming event. Early indicators to watch include:

  • First-week viewing and completion rates for the film on Disney+.
  • Whether co-viewing or household engagement is highlighted in investor and trade updates.
  • Campaign emphasis: does Disney sell the remake, the music, or Dwayne Johnson’s Maui?

The release is a classic platform-building play. Disney+ can use an established IP to anchor its Q4 family slate, reduce churn among household accounts, and create a cross-promotional surface for merchandise, music and the original animated title. The question is whether the execution matches the critical tailwind.

For now, the only hard number in the story is the date itself. The next set of numbers—views, hours streamed, completion curves—will determine if “best of the remakes” becomes a business result or just a review quote.
