Jailer 2 at Rs 628 crore, No. 2 Tamil film

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has crossed Rs 628 crore in worldwide gross on day nine, moving into second place among Tamil releases and putting the Rs 691-crore all-time record held by 2.0 within reach.

How day nine stacked up

Sacnilk’s estimates put the day nine India net collection at Rs 14.50 crore from 10,484 shows. That is an average of Rs 13,831 per show. The Tamil version contributed Rs 9.35 crore from 4,885 shows, followed by Telugu at Rs 3 crore from 1,787 shows, Hindi at Rs 1.75 crore from 3,624 shows, and Kannada at Rs 40 lakh from 188 shows.

The combined India net now sits at Rs 348.85 crore, with India gross at Rs 408.55 crore. Worldwide gross, including overseas markets, is Rs 628.05 crore.

The all-time Tamil hierarchy

  • 2.0 – around Rs 691 crore worldwide
  • Jailer 2 – Rs 628.05 crore and climbing
  • Leo – around Rs 605 crore
  • Jailer – around Rs 604 crore
  • Coolie – around Rs 518 crore

Passing both the original Jailer and Leo is the more important signal: a sequel is now outperforming its predecessor, which is not automatic in the Tamil market. It means the franchise’s repeat value is translating into ticket sales rather than just sentiment.

What this means for the trade

The gap between Jailer 2 and 2.0 is roughly Rs 63 crore. Trade conversation centres on the second weekend, when Jailer 2 could challenge the record if it holds momentum. Crossing Rs 700 crore would be a fresh milestone for Tamil cinema, but it remains a projection, not a confirmed outcome.

For streaming and distribution teams, the language split is worth noting: the Tamil version alone contributed about 64% of the day’s domestic net, even as the Hindi version ran in a comparable number of shows. The core Tamil audience is still the engine; other versions add scale but are not replacing it.

What underpins the sequel

Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik return from the first film, with S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan joining the cast. Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff appear in cameos, and Anirudh Ravichander has scored the film.

That star stack gives the film reach across Tamil, Telugu and Hindi markets, which matters for box office and eventually for OTT licensing.
