Jailer 2 ranks No. 2 globally with $31.2M

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 did not just lead the Indian box office—it became the second-highest-grossing film in the world for the Oct. 16–18 frame. Rentrak estimates put the sequel at $31.2 million, behind only Paramount’s Street Fighter with $51.1 million.

The opening, by the numbers

The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel opened in India on Oct. 15 and took an estimated ₹224 crore ($23.5 million) over its four-day extended opening. That makes it the third-highest four-day start on record for a Tamil-language film. It is effectively level with Rajinikanth’s own Coolie, which the source estimates at ₹224.25 crore.

Daily movement was uneven: $7 million on Thursday, a dip on Friday, then a climb back to $6.5 million on Sunday.

Where the audience is

Tamil Nadu delivered the largest single share at $8.4 million. Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana supplied most of the remainder—a reminder that this is a southern Indian theatrical event before it is a global one.

In North America, Shloka Entertainments distributed the film to $3.2 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period, enough for a No. 9 debut and a $5.2 million territory total. The distributor says the film crossed $2 million on its opening day in the market.

  • Global weekend: $31.2M, No. 2 worldwide
  • India four-day opening: ₹224 crore / $23.5M
  • North America total: $5.2M through Sunday

Why this matters for planners

A regional Tamil film is now finishing ahead of Hollywood titles on the global chart—Sony’s Resident Evil took $22.6 million, Universal’s Other Mommy $17.9 million, and Verity $17.6 million. But the global rank is concentrated demand, not evenly spread awareness. Media planners should read the No. 2 position as a home-market and diaspora story, not a worldwide marketing footprint.

The sequel’s casting also signals an expansion play. Alongside returning cast such as Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa, Jailer 2 brings back or adds stars from Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi industries—Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan among them. Those short appearances can pull audiences beyond the core Tamil base, especially where those stars have their own pull.

For distribution and marketing teams, the operational lesson is to treat a big Tamil tentpole as a multi-territory release from day one: over-index screens and media in the home state and neighbouring southern states, then activate the diaspora and language-bridge casting elsewhere.
