Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has crossed the Rs 450 crore net mark in India on its eighteenth day in cinemas, according to trade estimates. The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster is still adding meaningful money just before Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana opens, which makes the next few days a screen-holding test rather than a victory lap.
The day 18 number
Day 18 net collection came in at Rs 11.20 crore from 8,906 shows, trade tracker Sacnilk reported. That pushes India net earnings to Rs 456.30 crore and domestic gross to Rs 533.75 crore. With overseas gross of Rs 3 crore on the day, the worldwide gross total stands at Rs 807.25 crore.
For media planners, the India net figure is the cleaner benchmark: it strips out tax and is the number most Indian trade reporting uses for hold and decline comparisons.
Language splits show where the value is
This is not one homogeneous audience. On day 15, the Tamil version earned Rs 8 crore, while the Telugu and Hindi versions added Rs 1.75 crore each. Tamil is carrying the run, and the Telugu contribution is materially useful, but the Hindi side has a distribution problem.
PVR-Inox did not screen the Hindi release in several northern locations amid a disagreement over the OTT release window. When a large chain withholds screens over streaming timing, it reduces reach in the Hindi market and signals how heavily exhibitors weigh theatrical exclusivity. Eighteen days after release, access to nearly nine thousand shows means exhibitors outside the affected Hindi locations are still betting on demand.
Why the OTT window is the real story
A shorter theatrical-to-streaming window gives audiences another reason to wait. Exhibitors know this, and a standoff with a Rajinikanth film shows they are willing to use screens as leverage. Smaller releases planning fast OTT premieres should expect tougher screen negotiations.
NDTV’s Latha Srinivasan called the sequel a commercial entertainer, praising Rajinikanth’s screen presence, humour, action and music. She noted, though, that the storytelling “occasionally loses direction,” particularly in the second half, and raised the possibility of Jailer 3.
What to watch next
The immediate test is Ramayana. If Jailer 2 holds its Tamil and Telugu legs after the new film opens, the run has a longer tail than the day 18 total suggests. If those legs soften sharply, the film may be more front-loaded. For entertainment marketers, the lesson is segmentation: a national campaign can waste money if the Hindi release is not available in key screens.
- Track language-level declines: Tamil-led strength can mask a weak Hindi result.
- Watch screen allocations: The OTT-window fight may spread to other chains or markets.
- Use the franchise signal: A possible Jailer 3 gives Sun Pictures a ready hook for sustained marketing.
