Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is no longer just a strong sequel—it is now a top-20 Indian grosser. Nine days after release, the Sun Pictures production has grossed ₹628 crore worldwide, pushing past Salman Khan’s Sultan and Prabhas’s Salaar in the all-time list.
Where the numbers stand after nine days
The film added ₹14.50 crore net in India on Friday. That brings its domestic total to ₹348.85 crore net, or ₹408.55 crore gross. International markets have contributed $23 million, taking the worldwide total to ₹628 crore.
After a first four days above ₹400 crore and a first week above ₹500 crore, weekday drops were expected. The second Friday number suggests the film has moved into a more normal hold pattern after the Dussehra holidays, but the accumulated total is still ahead of several established blockbusters.
A franchise result Tamil cinema rarely gets
Sequels with this level of commercial pull are unusual in this market. Jailer 2 is the rare follow-up Rajinikanth agreed to make, and it has already passed the ₹604 crore lifetime gross of the first Jailer. It has also crossed Vijay’s Leo at ₹605 crore, making it the second-highest-grossing Tamil film ever.
That puts it within reach of Shankar’s 2.0, which earned ₹691 crore worldwide in 2018. The gap is about ₹63 crore—a distance the film could cover if domestic and overseas holds remain steady.
Why this matters for the business
- Replaced Sultan (₹623 crore) at the 20th spot and moved ahead of Salaar (₹617 crore) and Saiyaara (₹578 crore).
- Second-biggest Tamil release ever, behind only 2.0 (₹691 crore).
- Worldwide gross now ₹628 crore from a nine-day run.
For media planners and entertainment marketers, this is a reminder that a strong star-franchise title can still command attention well into its second week. The international split also matters: $23 million from overseas is a meaningful share for a Tamil title and strengthens the case for wider distribution and marketing budgets on similar projects.
What to watch next
The immediate test is whether Jailer 2 can hold enough screens and momentum to overtake 2.0 in the coming days. If it does, it becomes the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time—and a benchmark for how much a sequel to a recent blockbuster can expand the original’s total.
