The demo number advertisers watch
Fox News opened midterm week with a warning sign in the one audience slice buyers care about most. Nielsen data shows its total day adults 25–54 viewership fell 32% in October to 98,000, the network’s lowest monthly average in 25 years. Its broader total day audience fell 27% year over year, even as CNN and MS NOW improved against the same month.
That does not mean Fox News lost its grip on cable news. It still averaged 1.1 million total day viewers in October, against 588,000 for MS NOW and 402,000 for CNN. It took 53% of the three networks’ combined audience and 99 of the 100 most-watched cable news telecasts. Fox also says it is tracking toward its highest-rated midterm year in total day.
What Fox says happened
Fox and executive chair Lachlan Murdoch are calling it viewer fatigue after an intense 2025 news cycle. “Those viewers are not switching to another news channel, they are just fatigued and watching slightly less television overall,” Murdoch said on Monday’s earnings call.
The financial picture gives that argument some support. Fox Corp.’s cable programming segment, which includes sports, lifted advertising revenue by 10% in fiscal 2026 and distribution revenue by 5%, per its annual filing. Higher ad pricing and affiliate fees offset the ratings and subscriber pressure — but that performance predates the October decline.
The bigger audience trend
A pullback in political news consumption may be wider than one network. Pew Research found 36% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents followed the news all or most of the time in 2025, down from 57% in 2016. Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report separately found 45% of Americans sometimes or often avoid the news.
That pattern differs from Fox’s post-2020 viewer revolt, when Newsmax briefly gained after Fox called Arizona for Joe Biden. There is no clear evidence of a comparable migration now. Nielsen has also changed its Big Data + Panel methodology since August, so the October-to-October comparison is not perfectly clean.
- Fox averaged 1.1M total day viewers, still 53% of the three-network cable news audience.
- The adults 25–54 demo fell 32% to 98,000, a 25-year monthly low.
- Fox News passed 3.8B YouTube views through Oct. 27, but digital views do not replace linear TV revenue.
What media teams should watch
For planners and analysts, the October numbers are a reminder to separate platform reach from business durability. Fox’s revenue can grow while its linear demo shrinks, but that equation depends on being able to keep raising prices and distribution fees on a smaller audience. If news avoidance deepens, buyers may push back on paying more for fewer impressions.
This week’s midterm coverage is the next read, not the final verdict. A strong election night can spike viewing without settling whether the demo decline is cyclical fatigue or a structural shift to streaming and lower news consumption.
