Evil Dead Burn hits HBO Max Oct 2

HBO Max will carry Sébastien Vaniček’s Evil Dead Burn as a global streaming exclusive from Friday, October 2. The HBO linear premiere lands the following night, Saturday, October 3, at 8 p.m. ET.

The New Line Cinema / Warner Bros. Pictures horror title reached U.S. theaters on July 10. Vaniček directed from a script written with Florent Bernard, and the cast includes Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Erroll Shand and Maude Davey. Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi produced; Bruce Campbell, Romel Adam, Sarah Spurway, Jose Cañas and Lee Cronin executive produced.

A franchise lead-in, not just a premiere

HBO is wrapping the new film in older chapters. The linear debut will be preceded by Fede Álvarez’s Evil Dead (2013) and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise (2023), turning Saturday night into a catch-up block. That is a scheduling signal, not just a programming note: the platform is lowering the cost of entry for viewers who may know the franchise but skipped recent instalments.

The official synopsis frames the film as “a family reunion from hell,” with a widow discovering that marriage vows persist “even in death.”

Why the window matters

For ScreenStat readers, the interesting number is not the date but the sequence. The franchise has already cycled through a long arc: Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, Álvarez’s 2013 reboot, and Cronin’s 2023 Evil Dead Rise, which took $147 million globally. Evil Dead Burn now moves quickly to streaming, and the next installment, Evil Dead Wrath from Francis Galluppi, is already set for 2028.

  • Streaming exclusive: HBO Max gets the film first, globally, on October 2.
  • Linear follow-up: HBO airs it a day later at 8 p.m. ET with two catalogue lead-ins.
  • Bridge release: Evil Dead Wrath is dated for 2028, so this title keeps the IP warm.

What to watch

The near-simultaneous streaming and linear launch is a useful case for platform strategists. A day-one streaming window does not necessarily cannibalize linear in this design; HBO is using linear as a curated event, with older films doing the audience-building. The risk is that audiences may treat the title as a library item before its linear slot has a chance to anchor the schedule. The first real test is whether the Saturday linear telecast adds material tune-in beyond the Friday streaming debut.
