Ajay Devgn’s biggest box-office record is about to change hands after six and a half years. Drishyam The Conclusion has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark, and trade expectations now point to a lifetime of more than Rs 350 crore. That would take it past Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior, which collected Rs 279.55 crore in 2020.
Franchise beats star power
The film’s day-one number tells the sharper story. Most of the trade had pencilled an opening of Rs 35-40 crore; the film opened at Rs 62 crore. What makes the number unusual is that this is a thriller with no songs and no action set-pieces. As trade analyst Taran Adarsh put it, the audience is open to all kinds of cinema, provided it connects with them.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan framed the milestone as Ajay Devgn’s biggest solo hit. Exhibitor Raj Bansal links it to the halo from the actor’s previous release, Dhamaal 4, and says he had predicted a career-best result two weeks before release.
What to do with the data
For distributors and media planners, the useful signal is franchise equity, not star power alone. Exhibitor Vishek Chauhan observes that Ajay Devgn’s originals tend to open in the Rs 8-15 crore range, while franchise titles can go anywhere. The same logic, he says, applies to Akshay Kumar.
- Model franchise titles as a separate forecasting variable from star-led originals.
- Treat known IP as an event window: the trade now talks of Golmaal 5 opening at Rs 70-80 crore on day one.
- Watch Bhooth Bangla and similar originals for franchise-building potential rather than judging them only on opening day.
The Hollywood parallel is instructive. Chauhan points to Tom Cruise’s original Digger opening at $8-10 million, far from Top Gun and Mission: Impossible levels. The pattern suggests audiences reward older stars when they stay inside known worlds.
For the Indian screen business, Drishyam The Conclusion is more than a record. It is a reminder that a franchise can convert a mid-range thriller into an event release, and that the next big opening may come from the library, not a new character.
