DIRECTV is opening the fall sports season with a price cut aimed at new streaming subscribers. Its MySports Genre Pack is being offered at $49.99 for the first month, down from the standard $64.99 monthly rate, with a five-day free trial attached.
The timing matters. Major League Baseball’s postseason is already underway, the NHL season has started, and the NBA tips off on Oct. 20. This is the window when casual viewers feel the strongest pull toward a sports bundle.
What the pack actually includes
The discount bundles ESPN’s new Unlimited plan at no extra charge, which gives subscribers the full ESPN linear network suite plus streaming programming. The core sports lineup also includes:
- NFL RedZone, NFL Network, NBA TV, NHL Network and MLB Network
- FS1, FS2, CBS Sports Network, Big Ten Network and SEC Network
- TNT, TBS and truTV, plus local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates where available
RedZone is the tactical hook for football fans: it jumps between Sunday afternoon games and shows scoring plays across the league, without requiring a separate NFL Sunday Ticket subscription. Sunday Ticket itself is not included in MySports and remains a distinct purchase through YouTube and YouTube TV.
Why the offer is structured this way
The promo is a classic streaming acquisition play. The first month is priced low, the free trial lowers the sign-up barrier, and the service then auto-renews at the then-prevailing rate, currently $64.99 per month, unless the customer cancels. The offer is limited to new customers and select sales channels.
For media planners and entertainment marketers, the useful signal is not just the discount but the bundling logic: a premium add-on, ESPN Unlimited, is folded into the entry price instead of being sold as a second subscription. That converts a price comparison into a value comparison.
What to watch next
The real test is retention. A sports viewer who joins for the MLB playoffs and NBA opening week may stay through the season, or may cancel when the first full-price bill arrives. The next data point to track is whether DIRECTV extends the promotion or reports subscriber movement around the auto-renewal date.
For now, the offer reframes the fall sports conversation: the cheapest available door into NFL RedZone and ESPN Unlimited comes with clear terms and a full-price renewal. The question is how many new sign-ups turn into recurring revenue.
