Record 8.9M viewers for Celebrity Traitors opener

BBC One’s Celebrity Traitors came back with a number that looks like a World Cup qualifier, not a midweek reality opener. Thursday’s 75-minute launch drew 8.9 million viewers in overnight UK figures and peaked just above 9 million. It is the biggest opening episode for The Traitors in the UK across celebrity and civilian runs.

The numbers behind the night

  • 8.9 million overnight viewers for the Season 2 premiere
  • Nearly 55% share of all TV viewing in the slot
  • Second most-watched non-sport episode of 2026 so far
  • 3 million stayed for companion show Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked

The comparison sharpens the record: last year’s Celebrity Traitors opener launched with 3 million fewer viewers, and the civilian opener earlier this year was also well behind. The only non-sport TV episode ahead of it in 2026 to date is the civilian Traitors final from January. The franchise now holds both the biggest and second-biggest non-sport slots of the year.

Why it matters

A near-55% share means the show did more than win its slot; it dominated the entire evening. More than half the people watching television in that time chose this one programme, a concentration of live attention rarely available outside sport. The BBC built that anticipation by running trails across its primetime schedule, effectively marketing the return as a national event.

The companion format is the underrated piece here. Uncloaked keeping 3 million viewers immediately after the main show signals that The Traitors is now a schedule engine, not just a single programme. That changes how the broadcaster can programme, promote and extend the franchise across nights.

The wider franchise picture

Season 2 will air Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. GMT (12 p.m. PT) for the next month, with a cast including Jerry Hall, Richard E. Grant, Bella Ramsey and Maya Jama. The civilian version returns for a fifth season early next year, while Peacock’s US edition continues with Alan Cumming as host. Studio Lambert produces the format.

The international value is also clear. Peacock already runs a successful US version, so a record UK launch strengthens the case for more local adaptations and licensing conversations. For media planners, eventized reality still creates mass reach on broadcast, but the value increasingly lies in how that audience is held across adjacent shows and formats.

What to watch next

Consolidated figures should add catch-up viewing over the coming days. Also watch Uncloaked’s retention once the premiere novelty passes; that will show whether the companion show can stand on its own or remains a spillover audience.
