Black Bear Buys Mother-Daughter Love Triangle Comedy Spec

Black Bear has acquired an untitled comedy spec from writing team Cassidy Alla and Read Masino, adding a high-concept family farce to its development slate. Variety reported the deal exclusively.

The package

The official logline centres on a mother and daughter who inadvertently begin dating the same man, forcing a family already at its own romantic crossroads to manage the fallout.

The writers are still working toward feature breakouts, but their credits read like a map of the current comedy pipeline:

  • Alla worked for Justin Noble, co-creator of The Sex Lives of College Girls.
  • Masino was a writers’ assistant on Amazon’s Spider-Noir and Apple’s Brothers and The Muppet Show.
  • The duo met as assistants at Apatow Productions and have a Netflix feature in development with Berlanti/Schechter producing and Nahnatchka Khan directing.

Why it matters

For buyers, this is a low-cost option on a voice, not a package. Black Bear is not paying for a star or an existing franchise; it is backing a premise and two writers whose names still need to be introduced. That is the classic spec-market bet: acquire early, develop cheaply, and attach talent later.

Michael Heimler, Partner, President of Production & Operations at Black Bear, called it “one of the funniest and most poignant scripts we have seen in years” about romance, family and their dysfunction.

Alla and Masino added that they had written “a chaotic comedy about a family (not to be confused with a family comedy).”

What to do about it

The deal is also a signal about where new screenwriting talent is coming from. Writers’ assistant jobs and development desks sit close to the decisions, and the assistants who do the reading, tracking and note-taking are increasingly becoming the next spec-market voices. For content teams and producers, that means watching assistant credits on buzzy shows is a legitimate scouting channel, not a favour to someone’s assistant.

For entertainment marketers, the logline is the trailer before the trailer: one sentence, visual, and easy to cut into social clips. A premise this clean can be tested with audiences long before a frame is shot.

Black Bear, which launched its distribution arm in 2025, has recent credits including Train Dreams, Sing Sing and The Imitation Game. Its upcoming slate includes Honeymoon / Funeral, Wicker and Guy Ritchie’s Wife and Dog with Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike. The comedy spec fits a studio that is building a broader theatrical and distribution footprint.

The next test is familiar: packaging. With no director or cast attached, the project will live or die on whether Black Bear can turn a sharp logline into a package that justifies a green light.
