Amazon MGM builds a second-chance romance package
Amazon MGM Studios is developing Vineyard Haven, a romantic drama feature written by Nkechi Okoro Carroll, the showrunner who just closed out The CW’s All American after eight seasons. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Michael McGrath are producing through Berlanti Schechter Films.
The premise is a long-arc romance: two teenagers share a memorable summer on Martha’s Vineyard, keep trying to meet up in the summers that follow and never get the timing right. Nearly a decade later, the paths cross again. He has become an NBA star and is back on the Vineyard to deal with an injury; she has returned home while recovering from a difficult marriage.
A package aimed at two audiences
For screen marketers and media buyers, the brief reads like a two-quadrant strategy from the start.
- Built-in fanbase: Okoro Carroll has spent eight seasons feeding a CW audience that follows relationship turns.
- Producer momentum: Berlanti Schechter Films has Amazon MGM’s Red, White & Royal Wedding sequel and the Netflix thriller An Innocent Girl in the pipeline.
- Two-quadrant premise: A basketball star recovering from injury meets a woman escaping a difficult marriage nearly a decade after they first connected.
Okoro Carroll has kept a loyal young-adult audience through All American and its spinoff Homecoming, plus NBC’s Found. Her earlier co-executive producer credits include The Resident and Rosewood. That track record reduces the discovery burden for a new feature, especially for a studio feeding a streaming slate where romance titles rely on familiar hooks.
Why the producing team matters
Berlanti Schechter Films’ near-term slate includes the Netflix thriller An Innocent Girl with Kerry Washington, James Marsden, Colman Domingo and Chloe East, and Amazon MGM’s sequel Red, White & Royal Wedding with Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez returning. A romantic drama landing at Amazon MGM alongside that sequel gives the label a continuing thread in the genre.
The signal to watch
The project is in development, so no casting or release date is on the board. What the deal shows is that Amazon MGM is buying a package with a proven series showrunner rather than an unknown spec. The nearly decade-long gap between the characters’ first summer and their reunion also keeps casting flexible across a wide age band.
Okoro Carroll is under an overall deal at Warner Bros. Television, so this Amazon MGM feature is a cross-studio move worth watching for how studios package showrunner talent outside their TV homes. For buyers, this one is a tracking title, not an immediate brief. When it moves forward, expect separate creative paths for sports audiences and romance viewers, with the NBA injury plot as the visual anchor and the missed-timing love story as the emotional one.
