Denzel and McQuarrie land a 2027 United Artists thriller

United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios have greenlit an untitled thriller starring Denzel Washington, with Christopher McQuarrie directing. The film is set for a theatrical release on October 1, 2027.

The story sends a former police detective home after a terminal brain cancer diagnosis earns him compassionate release. He has six months to live and wants to repair his relationship with an estranged daughter and meet a grandson he never knew. The past he hoped to leave behind has other plans.

The package

Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner wrote the script. McQuarrie produces with Heather McQuarrie, Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt through United Artists, along with Joseph Restaino for Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, Katia Washington and Tommy Harper. Tony Stopperan, Tim Honigman and Joe Guest are executive producers.

The timing works for Washington. His planned reunion with Antoine Fuqua on the Netflix Hannibal epic was paused during pre-production over budget issues. That pause moved the United Artists thriller to the top of his list after conversations with McQuarrie.

Why the deal matters

For distribution and exhibition, this is a two-quadrant talent package: Washington brings dramatic credibility and an older, upscale audience, while McQuarrie brings the precision-blockbuster track record from the last four Mission: Impossible films and crime roots in The Usual Suspects and Jack Reacher.

A theatrical date in fall 2027 puts the film in the awards-adjacent corridor, where adult crime thrillers can hold screens if word of mouth connects. Amazon MGM keeps positioning United Artists as a theatrical label, not just a streaming supplier.

  • Washington’s next Netflix film, The Take, is also expected in 2027.
  • McQuarrie most recently helped steer Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
  • United Artists is already prepping Heat 2, Highlander, Lizard Music and The Mandela Catalogue.

What to watch next

Producers will next cast the daughter, the emotional counterweight in a script built on family and unfinished business. For media planners, the project is a reminder that Amazon MGM is becoming one of the more dependable sources of marquee theatrical titles in the back half of the decade.
