The Student of the Year franchise is being rebuilt as a thriller for streaming. JioHotstar has set Student of the Year: After Dark for a November 13, 2026 premiere, moving one of Hindi cinema’s glossiest campus properties away from musical romance and into a darker St. Theresa world.
Dharmatic Entertainment produces. Reema Maya directs. The show marks Shanaya Kapoor’s OTT debut in what Karan Johar describes as a double-role performance, with the first look positioning the series as a thriller-driven competition rather than a teen romance.
What has been announced
JioHotstar will stream the series exclusively from November 13, 2026. Dharmatic Entertainment is the producer, Reema Maya is the director, and Shanaya Kapoor leads the cast. The franchise’s original campus setting remains recognisable in name, but the narrative shifts to a darker, thriller-led format at St. Theresa.
Alok Jain, Head of Hindi and English Entertainment Business at JioStar, calls the move ‘reimagining an iconic franchise for a new format and a new generation,’ framing it as both a responsibility and a creative risk. Karan Johar says the team is ‘breaking every rule we set,’ while Reema Maya describes the show as ‘stripped to its bones and reimagined as a thriller competition web series.’
Why the tonal shift matters
Student of the Year began as a 2012 theatrical launchpad for young stars, built on high-gloss musical romance. That is very different from a thriller competition. The pivot tells subscribers that JioHotstar is not simply monetising nostalgia; it is using a familiar brand to acquire attention for a streaming-native format.
Dharmatic’s Apoorva Mehta is explicit about that: the project is not a straight reboot but a ‘bold, genre-defying reimagining’ aimed at a new generation. Combined with Reema Maya’s reputation for daring narratives, the pitch is positioned as a director-led thriller rather than a formulaic franchise extension.
The announcement gives media buyers no viewership commitment or subscriber target, so launch-week sampling becomes the real report card. For a platform investing in original Hindi content, the bet is that franchise recall can lower acquisition cost even when the genre changes.
Shanaya Kapoor’s comment also signals the positioning: she calls the role ‘layered, flawed, and unapologetically real,’ a deliberate contrast to the franchise’s earlier image. That is a clear attempt to attract an audience that may have aged out of campus romance but responds to darker young-adult drama.
What to watch
Media planners should treat this as a test of franchise elasticity. The real question is whether the known title drives tune-in, or the thriller format does.
- Track whether franchise recall lifts first-week sampling beyond a comparable new thriller.
- Watch how marketing balances the Student of the Year name with the darker tone.
- Do not assume the original campus-romance audience follows automatically.
For streaming teams, the lesson is straightforward: a known IP reduces discovery friction, but only if the tonal repositioning is signalled early and consistently.
