Ranabaali day 1: Rs 16.50 cr worldwide, behind Kingdom

Ranabaali, the Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna period action drama, grossed Rs 16.50 crore worldwide on its opening day, Friday 16 October. The number puts the film below the actor’s last two major openers, Kingdom and Liger, in first-day collections.

The day-one split

India nett stood at Rs 9.25 crore, while domestic gross came to Rs 10.75 crore. Overseas markets added Rs 5.75 crore. The film played 2,515 shows across India at 57% overall occupancy, with 711,679 footfalls recorded.

The Telugu 2D version was slightly behind the all-format average at 54.70% occupancy. Night shows led with 67.92%, followed by afternoon at 56.31% and evening at 51.77%. Morning shows were the weakest at 40.92%.

The time-band skew is a programming signal, not just trivia. Audiences showed up for night and afternoon shows, but mornings were soft. If the film holds on Saturday, the rational way to grow revenue is to protect and add evening and night capacity rather than push weak morning inventory.

With India nett of Rs 9.25 crore from 2,515 shows, the average works out to roughly Rs 36,800 per show. That matters because day-one gross alone does not tell a media planner whether demand is weak or whether the release is simply smaller.

What the Kingdom and Liger comparison shows

The headline comparison is easy to misread. Kingdom and Liger opened bigger, but the release footprints were not equal.

  • Kingdom took Rs 18 crore nett in India from 4,236 shows — nearly double Ranabaali’s show count.
  • Liger opened at Rs 16 crore nett in India, with Rs 24.20 crore worldwide on day one.
  • Ranabaali’s 57% overall occupancy is respectable, but keeping prime-time capacity full matters more than chasing weak morning shows.

So the first-day gap is not simply evidence of falling star power. It is also a story of a narrower release. A film with roughly half the shows of Kingdom was never likely to match its rupee total on day one, even with strong occupancy.

What to watch next

Ranabaali is set during the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78 and follows Deverakonda as Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, with Mandanna as Jayamma. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, it reunites the lead pair for the third time, and is their first film since their wedding in February.

For the trade, the weekend test is clear. If Saturday and Sunday hold occupancy above 55% and show counts expand in high-performing night and afternoon belts, the opening number becomes a floor. If occupancy drifts, the day-one figure could become the ceiling.
