Reese Witherspoon Reclaims $1B Hello Sunshine With Mediawan

Reese Witherspoon is reclaiming the production banner she founded. In a deal announced Tuesday, she is partnering with France-based studio group Mediawan to buy Hello Sunshine back from Candle Media.

Hello Sunshine co-founder Seth Rodsky will join the company’s board alongside Witherspoon and representatives from Mediawan. Financial terms were not disclosed.

A $1 billion banner changes hands

Candle Media’s earlier investment in Hello Sunshine valued the company at nearly $1 billion. Since Witherspoon founded the banner in 2016 with backing from The Chernin Group, it has built a slate around female-led stories: Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Daisy Jones & The Six and Where the Crawdads Sing.

Recent and upcoming titles include Elle, the Legally Blonde prequel series on Prime Video and Lucky with Apple TV+.

Mediawan’s growing Hollywood portfolio

The buyback is the latest in a Mediawan acquisition streak. The European studio has added Chernin Entertainment, Brad Pitt’s Plan B and See-Saw Films to a label roster that includes Kinetic Content and the producers behind Slow Horses, Call My Agent! and Love Is Blind.

Witherspoon called the move “a homecoming,” describing Mediawan as “a global, independent studio by putting creators first.” Mediawan co-founder and CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton said the group gives creative companies resources, scale and independence.

Why this matters for screen buyers

For streaming and TV buyers, this deal concentrates a major source of premium female-skewing IP under a group with deeper European distribution. Hello Sunshine’s book-club engine doubles as an audience research tool: a title that connects with Reese’s Book Club often becomes a screen project with built-in demand.

  • Track the slates: Watch Hello Sunshine titles moving through Prime Video and Apple TV+ as the deal integrates.
  • Read the IP signal: Book club momentum can indicate which female-led projects streamers are likely to commission next.
  • Separate label from group: Mediawan’s pitch is independence at the label level, so do not expect one uniform content strategy.

The structure is a content roll-up: buy celebrated labels, keep their brands, and share financing and distribution. That gives founders like Witherspoon a path back to ownership while giving media buyers a larger, more predictable pipeline.
