Specialty distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to Sophia Takal’s psychosexual thriller Act One, with a theatrical release planned for 2027. The pickup reunites Takal with the label that released her earlier film Always Shine, and gives the title a long runway from festival to screen.
The package
The film stars Ella Beatty as Hannah, a sheltered 17-year-old aspiring actor, and Ari Graynor as Melanie, the founder of an elite acting studio. As Hannah is drawn into Melanie’s increasingly extreme methods, the lines between performance, desire and manipulation blur.
- Lead cast: Ella Beatty and Ari Graynor
- Supporting cast: Sinclair Daniel, Tavi Gevinson, Elizabeth Reaser and Robert Sean Leonard
- Festival debut: Tribeca Festival, June 10
- Producers include Savage Rose Films, Tandem Pictures, Foxglove Films and Watermark Media
Why the early pickup matters
Acquisition announcements are not just rights trades; they are scheduling signals. A 2027 theatrical date means Oscilloscope is committing to a specialty window well in advance, rather than parking the film in a quick streaming slot. For media planners and entertainment marketers, the acquisition date becomes the first campaign beat.
Takal called the reunion a homecoming. “Getting to work with them again after Always Shine feels like a homecoming,” she said. That existing distributor-filmmaker relationship reduces some discovery risk for programmers and buyers.
The long-lead play
There are no box office or viewership numbers in this story yet. The value is the window: a 2027 release gives teams time to build awareness in waves—Tribeca reception first, casting and genre positioning next, then theatrical push. The psychosexual thriller angle, young cast and extreme-methods hook are ready-made creative assets for a specialty campaign.
For teams tracking the indie slate, treat the acquisition as the start of the media plan, not the trailer. Early positioning can shape audience expectations before the first poster drops.
