CoComelon's 200 billion views now face the box office

CoComelon has spent two decades as a YouTube lullaby machine. Now its parent, Moonbug Entertainment, wants to prove it can be a real film and streaming franchise. The company is moving the flagship preschool series from Netflix to Disney+ next year and releasing The CoComelon Movie with DreamWorks, betting that a brand built on short-form video can hold a movie theatre.

The numbers behind CoComelon’s climb

The first CoComelon video appeared in September 2006. Moonbug says the brand now counts more than 200 million YouTube subscribers and 200 billion lifetime views. A 2020 Netflix deal repackaged the short musical videos into a streaming hit, but executives say it took the 2023 spinoff CoComelon Lane to make the characters talk and become an actual franchise. Live-action Melon Patch and CoComelon Playdates with Sanrio Friends followed.

  • 200 billion lifetime YouTube views, with over 200 million subscribers.
  • 2020: Netflix deal turns repackaged videos into a streaming hit.
  • 2023: CoComelon Lane introduces talking characters.
  • Next year: Flagship shifts to Disney+; The CoComelon Movie arrives via DreamWorks.

The platform bet

Next year the flagship CoComelon series exits Netflix for Disney+, where Disney is building preschool programming around Bluey and its own titles. Moonbug is also taking its biggest swing: a DreamWorks feature about JJ’s first day of kindergarten.

“JJ is in the big leagues now,” says director Kat Good. The film’s music, led by executive music producer Justin Tranter, leans on 2000s indie reference points such as MGMT, Passion Pit and LCD Soundsystem to give parents a nostalgia hook while children get modern synth-driven songs.

Why this matters for media planners

Moonbug’s YouTube-first model gives it something legacy studios cannot easily replicate: immediate audience feedback. Courtney Holt, managing director of the Americas, describes it as an audience-centric model with “immediate feedback”. From that loop, Moonbug saw JJ in focus performing extremely well, which shaped the feature. This is a stress test for the value of creator-first IP when it steps off-platform.

The test ahead

For streamers and buyers, the movie is more than a preschool release. If a 200-billion-view brand can convert YouTube attention into cinema visits and Disney+ retention, it changes the valuation of native digital kids’ IP. If it underwhelms, it signals that a view is not the same as a fan who follows a character across platforms.
