Ramayana readies a near-40-language global release

Ramayana will open in cinemas worldwide on November 5, and its release plan is built around a number Indian cinema has not seen before: nearly 40 dubbed language versions.

The release timetable

Advance bookings open on Dussehra, October 20, giving the film a run-up to the Diwali-week debut. The makers say the complete list of languages will be unveiled in a week or two.

A trade source speaking to Bollywood Hungama framed the ambition in box-office terms.

“Producer Namit Malhotra and the core team of Ramayana are determined to make it the biggest release ever for an Indian film.”

Why the language play matters

Dubbing is a distribution lever. It lets viewers in non-Hindi and overseas markets watch without subtitles, which reduces friction at the point of purchase. When Indian films are chasing global box office, local-language versions can expand the addressable audience beyond the diaspora.

  • India: A wider set of dubbed versions can pull in audiences beyond the Hindi belt.
  • Overseas: Sony Pictures is handling international distribution, and the language rollout is aimed at making the film accessible across territories.
  • Marketing: The team has already used promotions at CinemaCon 2026 and San Diego Comic-Con to build global awareness.

The scale of the production

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The music is composed by A R Rahman and Hans Zimmer.

The story is being told as a two-part saga. The first instalment arrives on November 5, 2026, and the second is scheduled for Diwali 2027.

What to watch next

For media planners and exhibition teams, October 20 is the first real demand signal. Advance-booking splits by language and territory will show whether the dubbed versions are converting interest into ticket sales before the holiday corridor opens. The language list, expected in a week or two, will clarify which markets the distributors are prioritising.

The bigger test is whether localisation at this scale becomes a template for other big-ticket Indian releases. If Ramayana converts language access into opening-weekend gross, expect the near-40-dub model to show up in more release plans.
