ABC is not just premiering The Rookie Season 9 on Jan. 6—it is rebuilding Wednesday night around the franchise. The veteran Nathan Fillion procedural will move to a new night and time, Wednesdays at 9 PM, and will lead directly into the new spinoff The Rookie: North at 10 PM.
A franchise block, not a one-off premiere
This is the eighth time-period change for The Rookie, but the larger signal is scheduling architecture. After The Rookie, ABC will slot the Jay Ellis-led The Rookie: North in the 10 PM hour, pairing the established title with the offshoot from day one.
The network has not announced the full midseason schedule, yet the move tracks with a familiar broadcast tactic: use an existing audience as a lead-in to launch a franchise extension and create crossover opportunities. Creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley confirmed at New York Comic-Con that Nathan Fillion appears in the North pilot, and Eric Winter and Melissa O’Neil will also appear in the spinoff, which is set in the Pacific Northwest and shoots in Vancouver.
Guest-cast details planners should note
Season 9 will continue the Season 8 cliffhanger—Tim and Lucy have been kidnapped—and the teaser frames the rescue as the central mission. The panel also mapped several recurring roles:
- Troian Bellisario as Stephanie Monroe, a thirty-something single mother training with Nolan.
- Dulé Hill as Lt. Hughes, a new watch commander filling in while Tim Bradford is missing.
- Molly Kunz as Quinn, an EMT newcomer in Los Angeles.
- Andy Allo as Brooke, an ER resident in the spinoff’s first season.
What it means for buyers and planners
For media planners, this is a clean block buy: two procedurals with shared universe continuity on the same night, and next-day availability on Hulu. The pairing gives ABC a pitch around audience flow and crossover sampling, while ad-supported buyers get a predictable procedural audience on a weeknight.
The risk is also visible: moving a steady performer an eighth time creates tune-in friction, and the payoff depends on whether North can hold the lead-in. That makes the Jan. 6 rating for the 10 PM hour the number to watch, not just the Season 9 opener.
The Season 9 opener is a two-parter, which gives ABC a longer window to convert North sampling into a weekly habit. It also raises the stakes for the first retention read.
Both titles are produced by Lionsgate Television in partnership with 20th Television and stream next day on Hulu.
