Netflix’s French feature Call My Agent! The Movie has opened softly by global ranking standards, but the company’s France team is not treating the early result as a verdict. The film logged 2 million EVCs in its first four days, missed the initial global Top 10, and later peaked at number seven.
The opening numbers
For a title positioned as one of Netflix’s prestige French plays, the global reading is subdued. French data watcher Frédéric Durand calls it the worst start for a French feature released on a Thursday in five years, behind Lost Bullet 2 and several recent international Thursday releases. French critics were split.
The caveat: the film hit number one in France and has held there. That domestic signal matters because Netflix’s French slate is not always designed to win the global Top 10.
Netflix’s response: engagement over rankings
At the Festival of Fiction in La Rochelle, Netflix France VP Pauline Dauvin and head of movies Gaëlle Maschi pushed back on the negative framing. Maschi said “the movie is finding its audience, and that fans are showing up.” She also told the panel the team was very pleased with the film’s number one position in France, adding that ratings are not the only input.
Netflix’s internal dashboard includes subscriber thumbs up and notes, genre-adjusted expectations, and total viewership. An action film and a comedy are not held to the same bar, Maschi argued. The team characterized the early returns as satisfying but too early for a final call.
Why this is not only a ratings story
Several structural factors could extend the franchise:
- Local commissioning logic: French titles such as Nouvelle École and Blood Coast are built for domestic audiences first; global reach is secondary.
- Creative openness: Creator Fanny Herrero has signaled she struggles to close the door on the story, though any follow-up is likely two to three years away.
- Producer alignment: Mediawan is central to French production and a major Netflix supplier; its CEO helped secure the George Clooney cameo.
- Broadcaster window: France Télévisions co-produced the film and will air it later, giving Netflix a potential risk-sharing partner if replay ratings are strong.
What planners should watch
For streaming analysts and media planners, this is a case study in separating global Top 10 optics from local engagement. A comedy feature can deliver subscription value in one market without becoming a worldwide event. The key indicators to track are whether the film holds its French number one slot, how quickly attention decays, and whether France Télévisions’ later window adds incremental reach.
The next signal is not another weekly ranking, but whether Netflix confirms any follow-up movie or series extension. A renewal would tell the market that France-first engagement, talent relationships, and production partnerships carry more weight than a slow global debut.
