Sony's PS5 FAST Channels Target 40-50 Million Engaged Users

Sony is using its gaming console as a distribution layer for ad-supported television. The company has launched Live TV on PS5, a lineup of more than 100 free ad-supported streaming television channels inside the PlayStation 5. Backed by Sony Pictures Television, the U.S. launch is positioned as a new way to reach viewers who already spend hours in a console environment.

Sony TV chairman Keith Le Goy told the Variety Entertainment & Technology Summit presented by EY that the target is 40-50 million PS5 users, an audience he called “incredibly engaged with that platform.” Those viewers are hard for linear channels to reach and attractive to advertisers, he said.

What the PS5 FAST play is trying to solve

FAST channels are now common on connected TVs, but distribution inside a gaming console is a different surface. Le Goy’s argument is that Sony can curate entertainment in a way that fits the PS5 audience and make the shift from gameplay to video feel seamless. If that works, it gives channel partners a new audience and gives advertisers a path to viewers who have largely left traditional linear TV.

  • 100-plus FAST channels on PS5, backed by Sony Pictures Television.
  • 40-50 million PS5 users are the target audience.
  • U.S. rollout first, with international expansion expected in the coming months.
  • Structural advantage linking Sony’s film, TV, music and gaming assets.

Le Goy also pointed to anime via Crunchyroll and Aniplex as another Sony strength. But the PS5 rollout is the more immediate test of whether Sony can convert its hardware reach into ad-supported streaming distribution.

What media teams should watch

For media planners and streaming professionals, the PS5 FAST expansion is a reach signal rather than a ratings event. The key questions are whether Sony can prove viewing time on the console, how many of those 100-plus channels find an audience, and whether ad loads stay light enough to keep gamers from tuning out. The company says it plans to roll the offering out to other countries in the coming months, so the inventory story could scale quickly.

Ad buyers should be asking Sony for early engagement data, channel-level performance and international launch markets. If PS5 viewing data can be connected to ad outcomes, it becomes a distinct inventory pool rather than another bundle of FAST channels.
