400-title distributor leads with a Khmer Wedding Dress

Malaysia’s Abnormal Studios arrived at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market with a slate built around a proven tearjerker: a Cambodia-set remake of the 2010 Korean drama Wedding Dress. The company is selling the film ahead of its local release.

The Phnom Penh reworking keeps the original’s mother-daughter spine while moving the story into Cambodian daily life. Dalin is a single mother who designs bridal gowns; her focus on work has opened distance between her and her 10-year-old daughter Mina. A terminal diagnosis changes the calculus, and she begins preparing everything she believes the girl will need once she is gone. It is the first feature from Huang Han, whose earlier work has screened at Berlin, Busan and Pingyao.

The lead title: inherited emotion, local texture

The package is not a straight translation. It is positioned as a local story that keeps the emotional core that made the Korean original attractive in the first place. That is a familiar sales argument in Asia, where a strong family story can move across borders but still needs a specific setting to feel immediate.

The wider slate bets on genre and fandom

Around the lead title, Abnormal is selling a volume slate rather than one event picture. Key titles include:

  • The Hungry One — Alejandro Hidalgo’s horror set during Malaysia’s Hungry Ghost Festival, now in pre-production with final financing still being closed.
  • Ali & Ben’s Spicy Meats — a cannibal black comedy-horror about two friends whose human-flesh jerky recipe becomes a winning, corrupting business.
  • Mimpi Kita: Castle in the Air — Malaysian sci-fi fantasy that sets a simulated world against a dystopian real one.
  • Because of You Ka Kui — a feature built around Canto rock frontman Wong Ka Kui, with strong fan support in select territories.
  • Next Stop, Somewhere — a drama led by Hong Kong veteran Anthony Wong.
  • Cambodian titles, including the rom-com Far Away Close to You and folk horror The Ghost of Banana Tree, plus crime thriller Silent Murders and supernatural horror Her Deadly Eyes.
  • Indonesian audience favourites, among them The Doll, Mata Batin and Rumah Kentang, and the rom-com series Sunshine Becomes You and Eiffel… I’m in Love.

Why it matters for buyers

Abnormal Studios, a subsidiary of Westec Media Limited, has been acquiring and releasing films since 2020. It has handled more than 400 titles to date and now puts out around 100 films a year across Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Mongolia and Nepal. Recent releases include How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.

For regional distributors and platforms, that track record makes this a slate pitched as a reliable supply line rather than a single festival bet. The Khmer Wedding Dress is the test case: if buyers respond early, it will signal how far a proven Korean drama can travel when rewrapped in Cambodian texture.
