Verity keeps the widest berth
Amazon MGM’s psychological thriller Verity is holding 3,510 North American locations in its second weekend, according to The Numbers’ October 9 theater-count update. That keeps it ahead of all three wide newcomers arriving the same frame: Other Mommy with 3,365 locations, The Social Reckoning with 2,606 and Angel and the Badman with 2,263. The 9 to 5 reissue adds 1,275 locations, while Heart of the Beast matches Other Mommy at 3,365 and Digger stays at 3,321.
The footprint is identical to the one Verity opened on, when it posted a projected $32.6 million debut and a box-office win. Holding the same location count into week two is a supply-side signal: exhibitors did not pull the film after opening weekend, even with three new wide releases competing for adult audiences.
Why a crowded slate raises the stakes
Other Mommy, directed by Rob Savage and starring Jessica Chastain, is the biggest new release. It is based on Incidents Around the House, a 2024 horror novel, and opens in 3,365 cinemas. Aaron Sorkin’s legal thriller The Social Reckoning, about whistleblower Frances Haugen, starts in 2,606 locations. The western adaptation Angel and the Badman opens in 2,263.
The collision matters because Verity‘s opening audience was 79% female, with 41% aged between 25 and 34. Those demos are also core to drama and horror. If Verity holds well, it shows that adult-skewing films can coexist when the market expands rather than simply cannibalising one another.
Read the screen count as a demand signal
For entertainment marketers and media planners, theater counts are one of the earliest indicators of confidence before actuals arrive. Distributors and exhibitors jointly set counts based on tracking, pre-sales and holdover demand. A film that keeps a wide footprint despite new competition is effectively getting a vote of confidence from the exhibition side.
- Verity: 3,510 locations — the widest in release
- Other Mommy: 3,365 locations — biggest newcomer
- Heart of the Beast: 3,365 locations, matching Other Mommy
- Digger: 3,321 locations
- Resident Evil: 3,085 locations
- The Social Reckoning: 2,606 locations
- Angel and the Badman: 2,263 locations
- 9 to 5: 1,275 locations
Use demographics, not just screens
The weekend is not only about counts. Verity‘s exit polling shows an audience that is 79% female and 41% aged 25 to 34, which typically points to strong weekday holds and longer legs. For media planners, that profile suggests female-skewing inventory and late-week scheduling could avoid wasted frequency in male-leaning slots.
For competing titles, the promo decision is whether to market against Verity‘s audience or find a different niche. Other Mommy has a horror hook, The Social Reckoning has a news-driven prestige angle, and Angel and the Badman leans western nostalgia. Each is broadening adult supply rather than perfectly splitting one demo.
The next pressure point arrives with Street Fighter, Whalefall and Sense and Sensibility, expected in approximately 3,500, 3,000 and 2,200 locations respectively. A strong Verity hold this weekend would position it as the fall season’s adult-drama anchor.
