Netflix returns to its Canadian first
Netflix has set the Season 2 return for North of North and released the trailer, putting the spotlight back on the first original series produced out of the streamer’s Canada office.
The Canadian comedy follows Siaja, a young Inuk mother played by Anna Lambe, as she works to build a bigger life inside a tight-knit Arctic community. In the new run she is still making bold decisions and bolder mistakes, and the central test is whether her community – and Siaja herself – believes she is ready to take charge.
Lambe leads a returning cast that includes Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Jay Ryan, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Zorga Qaunaq, Bailey Poching, Nutaaq Simmonds and Keira Cooper.
Local original, public-broadcaster partners
The series is created by Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, and co-produced with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in partnership with APTN. That public-broadcaster pairing is the strategic signal here, not the scale of the show.
North of North was the first original to come out of Netflix’s Canada operation. That milestone matters because it turned the Canada office from a licensing outpost into a commissioning hub. For a platform, a local title like this can build relationships with local producers, public institutions and talent while giving the service something culturally specific to market at home.
Canada is not among Netflix’s largest subscriber bases, but it has become an important commissioning market because of its talent, production infrastructure and co-production pathways. North of North returning for a second season signals that the streamer sees enough creative and audience value to continue the bet.
It is also a useful reminder that not every streaming original is designed to top a global Top 10. Lower-cost, locally commissioned comedies can serve a retention and market-development role, especially in countries where public broadcasters remain central to the TV ecosystem.
- First: the debut original from Netflix’s Canada operation.
- Partners: co-produced with CBC, in partnership with APTN.
- Returning lead: Anna Lambe as Siaja.
- Executive producers: Aglok MacDonald, Arnaquq-Baril, Miranda de Pencier, Mike Goldbach, Garry Campbell, Jessie Gabe and Robin Gurney.
What media pros should track
The announcement does not include a viewing-hours figure. For ScreenStat readers, that is the number to watch: whether Netflix reports demand for Season 2 in Canada, and how the show’s performance compares with its first run.
For media planners and entertainment marketers, the return date is a scheduling cue for Canadian comedy and Inuk-led storytelling. If the title becomes a recurring franchise, it strengthens the case that regional commissioning can produce more than a one-off milestone.
