Skydance reshapes international ranks as WBD merger closes

Skydance resets its international leadership first

Skydance’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery is closing, and the first visible reset is in the international operation. Kevin MacLellan, currently Paramount’s president of international and global content distribution, will not move forward as leader of the combined company’s international group, sources told Variety. That reverses a Monday report suggesting he was close to clinching the job.

David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz are said to be pursuing a thorough reorganisation of the international business rather than carrying over an inherited structure. No new international leadership team has been announced yet.

The international seat is the first integration test

MacLellan’s track record explains why the decision matters. In his current Paramount role he oversees international and global content distribution. Earlier, at NBCUniversal, he led international television and later global distribution and international from 2013 to 2020. In a 2019 memo, then-executive Jeff Shell noted that MacLellan oversaw a staff of 2,600 employees across 36 countries and advised on the Sky acquisition.

The Warner Bros. Discovery side is also losing its international chief. Gerhard Zeiler, WBD’s president of international, is likely to leave ahead of the merger as he pursues Austrian politics, including a bid for the leadership of Austria’s ruling Social Democratic Party.

What the new structure shows

Ellison said the team “will lead Skydance forward,” describing a “creative-first home” with scale, imagination and technology. Kreiz said the goals include making Skydance “the premier Hollywood content engine,” accelerating an integrated direct-to-consumer platform, and optimising a “highly profitable linear TV portfolio” for global reach.

Continuity sits with several senior executives, but not all legacy leaders are staying:

  • Kevin MacLellan will not take the top international role
  • Gerhard Zeiler is expected to exit before the merger
  • Casey Bloys, Dana Goldberg, Josh Greenstein, James Gunn, Peter Safran, George Cheeks and JB Perrette continue in their roles
  • Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group heads Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca will not join the new company

Why it matters for global media teams

For media planners, entertainment marketers and distribution partners, the international structure is where territory budgets, content slates and streaming priorities are set. With no inherited international leadership confirmed, expect slower decisions on cross-market campaigns and changes in regional account teams. The second-order question is whether the combined company pushes integrated DTC offers early or holds the line on linear profitability in key markets. Both choices shape how inventory is packaged and where marketing money is best placed in the next two quarters.

In practical terms, the safest move is to re-confirm territory leads before locking multi-market plans. Legacy Paramount or WBD contacts may not sit in the same seats after the integration, and some may leave as the reorganisation continues.
