Dorothy: Rs 12.01 cr worldwide, Tamil cut drives 96% of net

The Tamil version is doing almost all the work. Karthik Subbaraj’s crime drama Dorothy ended its tenth day in theatres with a worldwide gross of Rs 12.01 crore, while its India net stands at Rs 10.40 crore, according to Sacnilk data cited by The Times of India.

The language split is the sharper number

The Tamil original has earned Rs 9.99 crore net. The Telugu version has contributed Rs 41 lakh. That means Tamil accounts for roughly 96% of the film’s domestic net — a near single-language run despite a dubbed release.

  • Tamil net: Rs 9.99 crore
  • Telugu net: Rs 41 lakh
  • India net: Rs 10.40 crore
  • Worldwide gross: Rs 12.01 crore

Weekend bounce after a mid-week slide

The run has been uneven. Dorothy opened at Rs 90 lakh on Friday, September 25, rose to Rs 1.25 crore on Saturday and hit its opening-week high of Rs 1.40 crore on Sunday. Weekday collections then fell to Rs 85 lakh, Rs 85 lakh, Rs 83 lakh and Rs 78 lakh through day seven.

The second weekend recovered. Day eight collected Rs 1.08 crore, day nine Rs 1.00 crore and day ten Rs 1.05 crore. That is not a breakout, but it suggests the film is finding some repeat or word-of-mouth audience in Tamil.

Criticism and representation

The film’s queer themes have drawn both appreciation and boycott calls on social media, with criticism directed at Subbaraj and members of the cast. In an interview with Hyderabad Times, Subbaraj said he hoped the film would encourage audiences to treat transgender people with “greater dignity and acceptance.” He argued that mainstream Indian films have often used transgender characters in comic or stereotypical roles and that representation is beginning to change. He also recalled viewers saying the film made them reconsider their own behaviour, including men who told him they felt guilt over past treatment.

What this tells the screen business

For distributors and buyers, the number to watch is not the worldwide gross but the language concentration. A Tamil-led total of this size means the original-language audience is carrying the release; the Telugu dub is not adding meaningful scale. For OTT and satellite buyers, the film may travel as a Tamil title with a niche but engaged audience, carried partly by the representation conversation rather than by mass theatrical pull.

The second-weekend hold is a small positive signal: collections above Rs 1 crore a day after a mid-week dip. But with Rs 10.40 crore India net in ten days, Dorothy is still a modest theatrical performer. The next test is whether the conversation around the film converts into a longer tail or fades once the debate quiets.
